What
STRESS
does to your skin
"I'm
so stressed out!"
If this is
a phrase you've often been heard saying, then it's about time you took a
breather and assess your stress levels.
Stress
usually connotes anxiety, nervousness or strain. But believe it or not, you need
some stress in your life to help you function at your best. Manageable levels of
stress give you a zest for life, release your creativity and generate excitement
by challenging you to stretch your abilities.
Stress overload
If you're
trying to do too much in too little time, chances are you're suffering from
stress overload. Stress overload can lead to
health problems, all too often showing on the skin.
New
research has shown that many of the changes in the skin that we consider a
normal part of aging are actually caused by environmental and emotional stress
factors, and are therefore quite preventable.
When
the body is under stress, it releases a number of stress hormones, which are
useful for short-term stressful situations, but harmful to the skin if sustained
over longer periods of time.
Hormonal
changes can cause a number of specific skin problems such as acne, thinning of
the skin, itching, excessive sweating and premature wrinkles, and even skin
disorders like psoriasis, hives or shingles.
Stress
furthermore upsets the body's fluid balance, making the skin sag and look
dehydrated.
Feeding stressed skin
As we mature, our skin responds
slower to the constant challenge of environmental change and stress due to its
reduced ability to bind moisture. This causes the cell renewal process to slow
down considerably. Skin becomes dry and wrinkled, blotchy spots often appear,
and it feels often tightly stretched.
Squalane is a nourishing chemical that is the more stable,
skin-friendly version of Squalene -- discovered to
be one of the main reasons sharks don't get cancer. Squalane is also a principal
ingredient in Sebum, the human body's natural oil that protects your skin and
keeps it young-looking. Squalane also serves as an antioxidant to skin cells,
protecting them from cancer-causing elements.
It
is also especially useful on dry scaly portions of the body as it helps to
oxygenate and maintain your skin's natural moisture level, making skin softer
and smoother without the greasy feel.
Daily use of
Squalane has been found to:
v
lighten brown age spots
v soothe psoriasis
v
hasten wound healing
v
help manage skin cancer and dermatitis
v
help heal scars and stretch marks caused by
pregnancy
Allantoin helps the skin to help itself by clearing away dead cells
while hastening the growth of new healthy tissue. This makes it particularly
useful in helping the skin recover from rashes and sunburn. Allantoin has also
been termed a counter-irritant that helps alleviate the untoward skin irritation
effects of certain ingredients found in cosmetics, soaps and detergents.
When used in combination, the
effect of Squalane and
Allantoin is complementary, allowing for more rapid and complete
recovery from the effects of prolonged stress on the skin.
