 N Skin Care Alert

Ingredients to avoid if you have dry skin

There are certain ingredients people with dry skin should avoid in some skin care products. Which ingredient that irritates your skin also depends on your skin type. What bothers oily skin may not irritate dry skin and vice versa.  If you have dry skin, use caution with the following:

Acetone -- removes oil from the skin surface

Alcohol -- can be very drying. However, do note that some ingredients, like alcohol esters and cetyl alcohol, sound like alcohol but lack its irritating effects.

Camphor -- found in many acne products and can be irritating.

Eucalyptus -- a potential irritant found in some acne products.

Mints -- peppermint, balm mint, wintergreen, and so on, can feel cool and refreshing, but may irritate the face.

Keep in mind that everybody's skin is unique. You may have no problem with these ingredients, or you may be sensitive to an ingredient not in the above-mentioned.

Guide to proper cleansing and toning

Cleansing

Remember to brush your teeth before cleansing your face as toothpaste can irritate the area around your mouth. Splash your face with tepid water, then cleanse your face. It's up to you whether you use a fresh washcloth or your fingertips, but fingertips are gentler. Lightly massage the cleanser into your skin with circular strokes. Rinse with tepid water then blot (never rub!) with a clean towel.

Toning

After blotting cleansed skin, apply toner to a tissue, which is less absorbent than cotton. The result: You use less toner. Smooth the tissue over your face, then let the toner dry before applying moisturizer.
