HECKLING FRECKLING
Most
people with red hair and fair complexion are susceptible to
freckling, or the progress of freckles on the skin. Genes also have
something to do with freckling – if your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, or anyone
related to you genetically have ‘em, then you’re also more likely to develop
freckles.
Freken,
Freknur, Freckled
Freckles are those flat,
circular spots that randomly appear in the skin, especially at areas always
exposed to the sun -- like the face, forearms, hands, trunk, and back. Their
colors vary from red, yellow, tan, light-brown, brown, or black, and they are
always darker than the skin. The reason behind this is that freckles are actual
deposits of melanin, the element that
determines the skin’s color. The darker the skin, the more melanin it has.
Meanwhile, melanin protects people from UV (ultraviolet rays) of the sun.
Why are they called “freckles”
anyway? Well, the term “freckle” accordingly came from the Middle English word
“freken”, which in turn traces its roots to the Old Norse word
“freknur” that means “freckled”.
Freckle Types
Surprised? Believe it or not, there are different kinds of types of freckles! In
fact, there are two types of freckles: ephelides and lentingines.
Ephelides (singular form: ephelis)
are small, brown, flat spots on sun-exposed skin that darkens in response to
sunlight. They are mostly seen among fair-skinned children or young adults with
red or blond hair and blue eyes, and occur more frequently among females. A
study observed that ephelides become equally distributed on the face, arms, and
trunk, and that they fade with age.
Meanwhile, there are two
varieties of lentigines (singular form:
lentigo):
-
Simple lentigines are small, brown, flat spots that are not
usually seen in sun-exposed areas. They also do not darken in response to
sunlight. Simple lentigines develop in children and young adults who are not
necessarily fair-skinned people.
-
Solar lentigines are brown, flat spots seen in sun-exposed
areas, especially on the trunk. They result from long-term cumulative
sun-exposure. However, unlike ephelides that fade with age, solar lentigines
increase their prevalence and number with higher age and are more frequently
seen among males. They are also found to be more common than ephelides.
Can Freckles Be Avoided?
People
are not born with freckles. However, if freckling runs in your genes, freckles
will usually start appearing at the age of 5 years -- although they may not be
noticeable because they are still few in numbers and are still light in color.
However, with sun-exposure, freckles become more numerous and darker -- thus
they become more noticeable. Therefore, if you know you have a tendency to
develop freckles, the only way to minimize their development as well as to avoid
darkening them, is to minimize unnecessary sun exposure.
Say Goodbye to Freckles!
Actually, freckles are not skin disorders. They do not pose any health treat.
(However, if you're nervous about a suspicious pigmented spot, see a physician
or dermatologist; they may not be freckles anymore, you know. Anyway, it's
always better to err on the side of caution.)
Nevertheless, if you’re really not comfortable with freckles and want them out
to have that blemish-free skin look, then you’re in luck! Godiva Natural Skin

Freckled
Skin? Sensitive Skin!
Did you know that freckled skin is often
delicate?
As we have mentioned earlier, skin with
more melanin is darker; therefore, the fairer the skin, the less melanin it has.
Now, since melanin protects the skin against sun damage that may result to
photoaging or even skin cancer, then it means that fair-skinned people are more
prone to sun damage because they have less protection! In fact, this is the
reason why skin cancer is more prevalent among white populations.
To protect freckled skin against sun damage
(and prevent the appearance of more freckles), regularly use
GODIVA Green Tea Sunblock Cream.
