“Hi there! I had to take the time to share my experience with your products. As an African-American female, I feel it is my duty to let it be known that this product really does work on black skin.

To begin with, my problems in particular started at about age 11. I started getting ‘dish rags’ on my face, or as my dermatologist calls it—seborrheah dermatitis. It starts like dandruff but after it flares up, the skin gets really raw and sore. I’m always left with very light patches on my skin, particularly around my hairline and eyebrows, the inside of my ears and around the creases of my nose.

Before last year, I had never gone to a dermatologist for it. When I first started getting it, I would just walk around like that until it completely healed and the color came back . . . Then as I entered my teens, things CHANGED. Enter bleaching. Certain bleaching products hit the market and I thought I had found the answer to evening out my skin. I used two products in particular that contained hydroquinone. I would put them everywhere except the lightened marks.  

Typical teenage acne became a part of the problem and I started bleaching on a regular basis to get rid of those scars. I did this to my skin until I hit my early 20s. That’s when the acne stopped, but the adverse effects of bleaching with hydroquinone really started to show.

The skin on my face was by then becoming abnormally darker than that on my body. As I progressed to my late twenties, it got even darker despite the fact that I had stopped using the bleaching products.

So here I am with a face that’s 4-5 shades darker than normal, with ‘dish rags’ and the melasma I developed on my cheeks and forehead during pregnancy . . . Now I don’t mind being black, but the quilt-work patches and ‘two-tone’ body color had to go.

By now, not only as a chemical engineer but especially as a consumer, I know better than reach for hydroquinone ever again. I also know that skin resurfacing methods might make things worse for my skin in terms of pigmentation. I finally saw a dermatologist and he gave me some steroid cream to help control the ‘dish rags’ and then suggested that I try an over-the-counter hydroquinone product to lighten the melasma.

Little did he know that I’d been there, done that, and if I would have shown him my legs versus my face color, he probably would have choked on the word hydroquinone. Anyway, I was crushed because this was his only recommendation . . . So I decided to give up at that point. I figured the melasma would clear once I stopped nursing (my child) . . . However, a funny thing happened this summer. I entered an herbal company’s website . . . What I came up with was information about licorice root extract as an effective and safe skin lightener . . . as I did more research on the net, I began to feel that this was something safe, fast-acting and therefore worth trying.
