More myths on Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Many of the
information you may have read or heard about
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are
misleading or untrue. Here are some common myths on AHAs:
AHAs cause sun sensitivity.
FALSE. When used correctly, AHAs do not increase sun sensitivity. Sun
sensitivity occurs when skin is irritated and inflammation occurs. Moreover,
those with very fair coloring are especially susceptible to sun sensitivity. It
is therefore recommended that
sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 be used in
conjunction with AHA creams.
Anti-wrinkle benefits of AHAs are due to their exfoliating nature.
FALSE. The effects of AHAs in modifying wrinkles and photoaging are due to
increased skin thickness and new collagen formation. It is true though that the
exfoliating nature of AHAs contribute to softer, more even skin tone.
AHAs thin the skin.
FALSE. AHAs, in fact, have been shown to substantially increase skin
thickness, especially when applied topically on photoaged skin.

How to protect
your skin from UV rays
The
sun emits three forms of UV light: UVA rays which cause premature aging
and skin pigmentation; UVB rays which cause redness and sunburn; and
UVC rays, the most toxic and which cause skin cancer. UVA rays are absorbed
into the epidermis and remain in high intensity all day long, unlike UVB
rays.
Accumulated
years of sun exposure is the primary cause of aging. The effects of UVA rays are
not immediately apparent, but show up years later in the form of age spots,
wrinkles, fine lines and other age-related skin conditions.
Since
most of the sun damage to our skin occurs before we reach our 20s, it is
therefore important that children be taught to use
sunblock daily as early as
possible to prevent skin aging later in life.
Doctors
agree that it is safe to use sunblock even on babies as young as 6 months.
Of course, babies of that age don’t get exposed to so much sunlight to need a
daily sunblock. But once they reach the age when they often play out in the sun,
it’s time to train them to make sunblock a part of their morning routine.
