[1]������ FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS, ANTIQUITIES OF THE JEWS, BK 14, 7:3; BK 17, 3:1; 8:1 - Herod the Great's father was Idumean (Edomite) and his mother Jewish.� Herod the Great married a Samaritan woman who bore him Archelaus [who ruled when Jesus came out of Egypt and was banished when Jesus was 12], and his brother Antipas who became procurator of Galilee.�

[13]����� THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 14:1-5 - At about this time, Herod, the regional ruler, heard what was being said about Jesus.� He said to his servants, "This has to be John the Baptizer come back from the dead.� That's why he's able to work miracles!"� Herod had arrested John, put him in chains, and sent him to prison to placate Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.� John had provoked Herod by naming his relationship with Herodias "adultery."� Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid because so many people revered John as a prophet of God.

[15]����� THE BIBLE, MARK 6:16-20 - Herod wouldn't budge:� "It's John, sure enough.� I cut off his head, and now he's back, alive."� Herod was the one who ordered the arrest of John, put him in chains, and sent him to prison at the nagging of Herodias....Herodias, smoldering with hate, wanted to kill him, but didn't dare because Herod was in awe of John.� Convinced that he was a holy man, he gave him special treatment.� Whenever he listened to him he was miserable with guilt ~ and yet he couldn't stay away.� Something in John kept pulling him back.
