Temple built by
King Herod the Great
This Temple complex was made of white marble and covered 26 acres.  The Temple building itself is toward the top left along the wall facing right.   At the extreme top left is the Fortress of Antonio used by King Herod's army and later the Roman army to make sure the Jews at the Temple did not cause disorder.  In Volume I of And We Thought We Knew You several incidents of slaughters at the Temple are brought out.

Only priests were allowed inside the Temple building.  Only men of the Levite tribe were allowed in the courtyard immediately surrounding the Temple.  When common people talked of going to the Temple, they meant going to the Temple complex, not going inside the Temple building itself.
It took 1000 men a year and a half to build the Temple building, and many other workers eight years to complete the remaining walls with rooms inside them for offices and residences of priests and Levites.

This model was created by Dr. Conrad Schick toward the end of the 19th Century
