[1]������ Synagogues were meeting places for the Jews away from Jerusalem where the Temple was.� They apparently began to be built while the Jews were in exile in Babylon and their Temple burned down around 500 BC.� Synagogues were used primarily for teaching scriptures; they never imitated or substituted for the ceremonies commanded to be taken care of at the Temple such as sacrifices.� As the number of priests and Levites grew through the millenniums, they were only needed a short time each year at the Temple.� Therefore, they lived throughout Palestine.� Those priests who also taught scriptures were also called Rabbi which means teacher.
[2]������ THE BIBLE, LEVITICUS 13:4 [NASV] - If the bright spot is white on the skin of his body and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin...then the priest shall isolate him who has the infection for seven days.

[4]������ Report of The Leprosy Mission International:� ...a very visible disease, starting with patches on the skin....having crooked hands, a nodulous swollen face, or sores on their hands and feet....Damaged nerves results not just in paralysis but in loss of sensation....burns go unrecognized, wounds untended, stones in shoes, and grit in the eyes are both undetected and untreated.� The end result can be loss of sight, fingers and feet.
