{Where Document name is cited first, it is Quoted.}
1. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:1,2,6,16 - The family tree of Jesus Christ, David's son, Abraham's son: Abraham had Isaac, Isaac had Jacob, Jacob had Judah and his brothers....Jesse had David, and David became king. David had Solomon....Jacob had Joseph, Mary's husband, the Mary who gave birth to Jesus, the Jesus who was called Christ.
2. THE BIBLE, JOHN 1:1-3, 14a [NIV] - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made [spoken into existence]....The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
3. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:18a - The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph.
4. There is no evidence Joseph was a much older man as some traditions say, and that he died when Jesus was a young child. When Jesus was 32 years old and now living in Capernaum, some distance north of Nazareth where he grew up, the people said this: THE BIBLE, JOHN 6:42 - "Isn't this the son of Joseph? Don't we KNOW [present tense] his father? Don't we know his mother?"
5. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:18b - Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that.)
6. SCIENCE NEWS, FEBRUARY 6, 1993, PP. 84-85 - Not only does physical work during stress help heal a broken spirit, but wood itself has physical healing properties. At the University of Wisconsin, both wood and plastic were injected with food poisoning agents. Overnight, the plastic still contained the bacteria. But 99% of the bacteria had died on the wood. Wood has anti-bacterial properties not found in any man-made material. Whether the wood is old or new does not seem to matter. THE BIBLE, Leviticus 15:12 (Part of the Law of Moses) - Any earthen pot touched by the defiled man must be broken, but every wooden utensil must be rinsed in water.
7. Abortion was not actually considered by Joseph. This is inserted to help the reader identify with what Joseph went through, especially as it applies to men today, as well as the consequences to mankind of such action.
8. TIME, NOVEMBER 7, 1994, PAGE 61 - The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington followed 1800 women over a seven-year-period. The study revealed that having an abortion raises the risk of contracting breast cancer by 50%. If the woman was under 18, the risk of getting breast cancer increased by 800%.
9. THE BIBLE, DEUTERONOMY 22:13-14, 20-21; 24:1 - If a man marries a girl, then after sleeping with her accuses her of having had premarital intercourse with another man, saying, "She was not a virgin when I married her....the judges shall take the girl...the men of the city shall stone her to death....If a man doesn't like something about his wife, he may write a letter stating that he has divorced her, giving her the letter, and send her away. [NOTE: In ancient times and in most civilizations, the engagement was legally binding, with the wedding only being the consummation of the marriage and a celebration.]
10. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:19 - Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.
11. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 20:20 - While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant."
12. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:21a - She will bring a son to birth...
13. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:21b - "...and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus--'God saves'--because he will save his people from their sins."
14. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:22-23 - This would bring the prophet's embryonic sermon to full term: "Watch for this--a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; they will name him Emmanuel" [Hebrew for "God is with us"].
15. THE BIBLE, ISAIAH 7:14 (Predicted about 700 years before Jesus) - All right then, the Lord himself will choose the sign--a child shall be born to a virgin! And she shall call him Immanuel (meaning, "God is with us").
16. THE BIBLE, MATTHEW 1:24 - Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God's angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary.
