[1] Sychar was a city in the province of Samaria in which few Jews lived due to their heathenism. Archaeologically, the mount Telul Balata is one-fourth mile from Jacob's well, and in it have been found artifacts from the time of Herod the Great and the rest of the first century.
[2] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:3-4 - So Jesus left the Judean countryside and went back to Galilee. To get there, he had to pass through Samaria.
[3] All statements attributed to Jesus which are not in the Bible are based on inference, are merely speculation by the author, and are used sparingly. Such statements always show up in italics.
[4] THE BIBLE, II KINGS 17:24, 33 - The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon...and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took over Samaria and lived in its towns....They worshipped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.
[5] THE BIBLE, GENESIS 33:19; JOSHUA 24:32 - For a hundred pieces of silver, he [Jacob] bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent....And Joseph's bones...were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob [his father] bought for a hundred pieces of silver....This became the inheritance of Joseph's descendants.
[6] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:5, 6, 8 - He came into Sychar, a Samaritan village that bordered the field Jacob had given his son Joseph....His disciples had gone to the village to buy food for lunch.

[9] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:9 - The Samaritan woman, taken aback, asked, "How come you, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (Jews in those days wouldn't be caught dead talking to Samaritans.)
[10] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:10 - Jesus answered, "If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water."
[11] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:11 - The woman said, "Sir, you don't even have a bucket to draw with, and this well is deep. So how are you going to get this 'living water'?"

[18] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:19-20; I KINGS 12:28 - "Oh, so you're a prophet! Well, tell me this: Our ancestors worshiped God at this mountain, but you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place for worship, right?"....The king made two golden calves. He said to the people, 'It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods'...."
[19] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:22 - "Believe me, woman, the time is coming when you Samaritans will worship the Father neither here at this mountain nor there in Jerusalem."
[20] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:22-23 - "You worship guessed in the dark; we Jews worship in the clear light of day. God's way of salvation is made available through the Jews. But the time is coming ~ it has, in fact, come - when what you're called will not matter and where you go to worship will jot matter."
[21] THE BIBLE, JOHN 4:24 - "Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That's the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself ~ Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration."
