LETTERS OF THE APOSTLES
to First-Century Churches

Lesson Five:  II Corinthians
Theme:  Comfort

Background of People He wrote
Paul wrote his first letter to try to get things straightened out with the childish church in Corinth. At first he thought he'd sail to Macedonia and visit them on the way north to Macedonia, and a second time on his way back south from Macedonia (2 Cor. 1:15-16). But he did not want to make just a brief visit after his trip through Macedonia; he planned to stay awhile with them on his way back through (1 Corinthians 16:5-7). Apparently, after leaving Ephesus he passed north through Troas (old Troy), hoping he'd find Titus coming back from taking them his first letter (1 Cor. 1:1 and 2 Cor. 8:16; 12:18; 2:13a), but Titus was not there. So he went on to Macedonia in Northern Greece (2 Cor. 2:13b).
Somewhere in Macedonia he met Titus (2 Cor. 8:1, 8) who had a mixed message for him from Corinth. Some say he made a rush trip to Corinth; but they were not ready for him yet, for he caused them much grief (2 Cor. 2:1). Indeed, 2 Cor. 12:14 and 13:1 said he was about to make his third visit to them. However, if it happened, it must have been brief, and he did not mention anything about it except that it was painful and he warned them (2 Cor. 13:2). He preferred to write them another letter rather than visit them (2 Cor. 1:23).
Paul's first letter was written with many tears (2 Cor. 2:4; 7:8). Apparently many of them were withholding their affection from Paul (2 Cor. 6:12). But others longed to see him (2 Cor. 7:7). Paul knew he had caused them sorrow by his letter. In some ways he did not regret it, but in other ways he did (2 Cor. 7:8-9). He was aware that he seemed "timid" when face to face with them, but "bold" when away and writing them (2 Cor. 10:1). In fact, some were saying, "His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing" (2 Cor. 10:10). He acknowledged he was not a trained speaker (2 Cor. 11:6), but said he had a thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7) which he never explains in his letters. He intended to come see them as soon as he left Macedonia (2 Cor. 9:4) and would possibly spend the winter with them (1 Cor. 16:6), and hoped they'd have their contribution for the poor in Jerusalem and Judea ready at that time (2 Cor. 9:5).
