Hollis’ (2005) article talks about some of the progress made in the relational database management system. Based on both the article and your own research, what are some of the new trends, products and applications that we can look forward to in the next few years?
Based on the article, if things keep going the way that they are we are going to see more of the same in the coming years. Although Microsoft is a relatively new front to the database wars, they still retain only a small share of the pie (which kind of surprised me.) I know in the past Microsoft has been very tough competition. There were some anti trust lawsuits that went on during the browser wars. I don’t know is this will continue with the SQL database platform with Bill Gates retired, but I see some of the same thing happening with the text chat and terminal services platform. Microsoft may be more professional in this respect because businesses are dependant on them using standards and not including “undocumented features.” I would expect that we will probably see an ebb and flow of the smaller SQL databases like MySQL, which was a great platform for SQL, but lack of good management could cause it to cede its throne to another, better manage company.
