| The Ultimate Guide to Food Storage | ||||||||
| I have found many sites about food storage, but most seemed to be the same genaric information over and over. So I decided to make this site to help those that were looking for a comprehensive guide to food storage and how to get going Eat what you store and store what you eat. Ok that makes a ton of sense but how the heck do you know how much of each thing to store? 1000 pounds of wheat isn't going to do you any good if you don't know how to cook with it or even worse if your allergic to it. There is a great basic food caluculator provided byt the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday SAints here. But after you get the basics which direction do you go in? The easiest way to do this is to figure out what your family eats in an average month. So lets first firgure out what your family eats in an average month. The easiest way to do this is to make a list. I keep on ongoing list on my frigde that lists everything I and my family eats. Everytime we eat something I write it on the list or if its already on the list I make a tally next to each item. So at the end of the month I know exactly what my family eats in a month. We have a family of 7 so its quite a bit. Sample List Canned Green Beans 32 cans Canned Corn 34 Cans Coconut Milk 6 cans Mayonaise 1 jar ketchup 1 bottle Chocolate syrup 2 bottles Butter 3lbs Spagetti Sauce 10 jars Macaroni & Cheese 12 boxes Ok so this is just a partial sample of what we would eat in one month. To figure out how much of these items you would need for a year supply, just take each items total and multipy it by 12. Yup that easy, really. You may want to add a little more on to items that you know you use with more frequency but you didn't use as much the month you calculated. Now lets talk about food you would want in a situation where you are living off your food storage. It great that you will have all the neisities, but what about some treats? I know when I am stressed out I love a little peice of choclate. SO I went to Costco and bought a box of Hersey's bars and the next time I went to the cannery I stuffed them in to a can with a couple oxegen absobing packets and viola! Food storage treats! I rotate them once a year when we go camping I take them along to make smores for the whole group! Think also about special occaions like birthdays. It's a good idea to store ingriedeints to make cakes, cake mixes,or even cakes in a jar. These are nifty little treats for your storage, check them out here |
