Pride in your heritage is one thing. You should be proud that you're Irish or Puerto Rican or Italian or Russian or Indonesian, and it's overly cool that you are proud of it.

Well lah-dee-dah! I'm glad you're Native American, but of course you can call yourself Indian but if I do you'll get your entire clan in my driveway some night and they'll replace my sweet car with a shitty motor home. Instead, I'll call you Native American, though all historical data say that Man crossed the Bering Straight from Russia and thus no humans are native to America, and you can keep running redlights and cutting me off. Then blame it on your being the ethnicity that you're being.
Meanwhile, I'll keep with my ethnicity and kill 80% of you with disease, while displacing the rest. Sorry, I'm white.

Here's a fun thing to try, by the way. Pick on the country that someone's from.
If they're dumb, which they probably are, they'll jump down your throat immediately. Even when you consider that about 5% of the people out there have been to any country that their bloodline can be traced to.
Not to mention that there's another simple fact to consider. Your great grandparents, parents, relatives, or you left that country to come to America for a reason! And that reason is: it fucking sucked!
You can defend your point with talking about nationalistic pride all you want. The fact of the matter is that even the most "romantic" and "exotic" countries in the world might be nice places to visit or to own a mansion in if you can afford it. But they are HELL for the average working man who has to raise a family and make sure that his seed gets spread on the Earth.
