Frederick W. Gowdy, born in Bloomington, Ill., March 8, 1865: graduated at Shelbyville, Ill., High School in June,
1885: married at Berwyn, Ill., June 2, 1897, to BERTHA M. SPRINKS. He was the founder of the Village Press;
In politics a Republican. 1908 he settled in Marlboro New York where he set up his press and began to publish
his own books, limited editions of exceptional beauty. He designed more type faces ( over one hundred twenty
designs) than any other person in the history of printing. Some of his best known Type faces are, Goudy old style,
Garamond, Deepdene, Forum and Kennerley. A fire in his print shop in 1939 destroyed over 75 of his original
designs and one of the Goudy family bibles. He traveled extensively, having visited four times England, France,
Switzerland, Holland and Italy. One son, Frederic Truesdale Goudy, was in the Navy during World War I on board
the U. S. Destroyer "Lonsdale."
