| Here are a couple of the steps required to turn a log into lumber. First the log is rolled onto the mill and stabilized. Then as this photo shows, the first cut is made to produce one smooth flat side. |

| The log is then flipped over and cut a second time. This is where a uniform thickness is established between two sides |

| Now that two sides are even the log is fliped over and one of the two remaining rough sides is removed. |

| Now the last side is complete and the log now has uniform thickness and is ready to begin cutting it into lumber.. In this case there remains some rough which will be removed later |
