TIPS TO BE LEECH BITE FREE.
When we are ready for tracking, then we should be also ready for facing Mother Nature. When we are tracking it is common to get insect bites.
Especially in wild and marshy areas. These bites can be prevented in many ways. But there is one more type of byte that really sucks the hell out of us. Yes it's the leech bite. One should not be afraid of leech bites, leach bites are not harmful but you loose a lot of blood.
Leech bites can be prevented to some extent by practicing following tips.
1) Moving quickly over the ground especially on leaves.
2) Keeping your shoes dry.
3) Avoiding unnecessary stops while walking.
But if you like to stop in the middle to have some rest then
1) Find a clean place (free from leaves) preferably a rock with flat surface.
2) Avoid standing on rocks with deep cracks.
3) Avoid standing below trees as leaches often fall off from the leaves.
But even though after taking all the precautions if you get a leach bite
Then don't pull it off. Sprinkle some salt or tobacco powder over the mouth of the leach, it will just fall off. But these methods are old and by the time you take some salt and apply on the leech you lose more blood. But there is one more efficient method, which I discovered.
THE STORY BEHIND THE DISCOVERY
I was attending the 5th zonal tracking program in GOA. It was a 5-day tracking program and two days have already passed. In these two days I have already hade some leech bites. So I decided to experiment with my pain killer spray on leeches. The next day we were on the track, which passed through a thick forest, and as I was track, saw a leech on my knee.
Quickly I used the pain killer spray over the leech and the leech fell off. The spray contained many natural oils with strong smell as its ingredients. It was these oils, which kept the leech away.
Next day to try the effectiveness of the spray in preventing leech bite I sprayed it on my shoes before starting the track, and when I returned from the track I observed that I did not get a single leech bite, where as my friends got as many as 15 to 20 leech bites. To get this result I also practiced the above tips to prevent leech bite.
So if you want to get rid of leeches easily then don't forget to carry a pain killer spray (ayurvedic) which is very handy to carry and use.
