Gboyega Olaoye Ayeni

Gboyega Olaoye Ayeni was born in Lagos on 18th April 1980. He attended Baptist Boys' High School, Abeokuta where he graduated in 1997 with distinctions in his Senior School Examination.

After completing the first year training in Physics/Electronics at FederalUniversity of Technology, Akure he transferred to the Department of Geology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. At various times during his training at Ife, he had internships with AMNI International Petroleum Development Co., Port-Harcourt where he acquired relevant Oilfield experience. He graduated with a First Class Honors degree in Applied Geophysics in August 2004.

He is a recipient of five awards from the Obafemi Awolowo University. His undergraduate thesis 'An Inversion Software for Interpretation of Schlumberger Resistivity Sounding Data' was presented at the 2004 West African Regional Deepwater Conference, Abuja, Nigeria. Gboyega also received the first runners-up prize in the 2005 ExxonMobil/NNPC/NMGS Award for Best undergraduate Geoscience thesis in Nigeria.

He is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, American Geophysical Union, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Petroleum Engineers, London Petrophysical Society, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society and Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists. He served in various capacities (including as Editor-In-Chief, General Secretary and President) in the student sections of various professional bodies during his undergraduate study.

Gboyega has a strong affinity for learning and research. In 2006, he obtained an MSc with Distinction in Exploration Geophysics from the University of Leeds where he was a Shell scholar and a recipient of the 2006 GETECH prize. At LeedsUniversity, Gboyega sat on the Faculty of Environment Learning and Teaching Committee representing postgraduate students. Gboyega spent the summer of 2006 in the Netherlands with dGB Earth Sciences participating in the development of a seismic characterization concept called 'The Hit Cube'.

Gboyega is now with the Stanford Exploration Project, a pioneering Seismic Imaging group at the prestigious Stanford University in California. He hopes to become an accomplished researcher and probably the first Nigerian in space.
