Game StoryCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux's inability to keep the ball in the park allowed the National League wild card race to get a little tighter. Maddux allowed three home runs, including a two-run blast by Adam Dunn, as the Cincinnati Reds posted an 8-3 victory over the wild card-leading Chicago Cubs. Entering with a one-game lead over San Francisco for the extra playoff berth in the NL, Chicago never was in this one as D'Angelo Jimenez and Darren Bragg belted two-run homers in the third inning and Dunn added his 44th in the fifth for a 6-0 cushion. "This is kind of like our playoffs, and it's fun playing in front of a packed house against a team that is playing for something," Dunn said. "So it is our playoffs." With the homer, Dunn became the second player in club history to record 100 RBI, 100 walks and 100 runs scored in a season. Joe Morgan accomplished the feat en route to his second consecutive Most Valuable Player Award in 1976. "That's definitely something that will mean a lot down the road and I'm hoping to add a few more numbers to that over the next few days," said Dunn, who also struck out for the 186th time this year, three behind Bobby Bonds' single-season record. "It's definitely an accomplishment and it's good company to be in." "That club doesn't have a lot of guys in it, and that says a lot right there," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "He also hit a big home run for us, too, but we are happy for him because he has really worked hard." The three blasts raised the season total of homers allowed by Maddux (15-11) to 33. The four-time Cy Young Award winner, who surrendered six runs and six hits in five innings, walked two and struck out six. He fell to 1-3 against the Reds this season. "I didn't pitch good," Maddux admitted. "You cannot cover up your mistakes when guys hit home runs after them. I hit two guys with two strikes and that's when you are supposed to get people out." Maddux opened the third by hitting Felipe Lopez with a pitch. After Jimenez followed with his 12th homer, Sean Casey was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, Bragg made it 4-0 with his third blast. Casey drew a leadoff walk in the fifth before Dunn deposited a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall. "All three home runs were hit after hit batsmen and a walk," Chicago manager Dusty Baker said. "So then he is trying to spot the ball and left it over the plate, and they didn't miss it." Josh Hancock (5-2) won for the fifth time in six decisions with Cincinnati, which acquired him from Philadelphia at the non-waiver trade deadline in July. The righthander, who helped his own cause with an RBI single in the seventh, allowed three runs - two earned - and seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in eight innings. "I just tried to stick with the game plan and keep the ball down," Hancock said. "The big guns came through. It was a real team victory." "You hate to give credit to other teams, but when nobody one through nine (in the lineup) is getting on, the other pitcher is doing something right," Chicago's Corey Patterson said. Patterson had a two-run triple for the Cubs, who fell into a tie with the Giants for the lead in the wild card race. San Francisco held on for a 7-5 victory over San Diego. "All we can do is put this behind us and come back tomorrow," Baker said. Houston, which is one-half game off the pace, posted a 2-1 triumph over St. Louis.
