Game StoryCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux could not make a three-run lead stand for the Chicago Cubs. Wily Mo Pena made sure the Cincinnati Reds would not squander a lead of their own. Pena homered twice and threw out Mark Grudzielanek at the plate in the eighth inning to preserve a lead as the Reds held on for a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Looking to extend his own record and win at least 15 games for the 17th straight season, Maddux was staked to a 4-1 lead. But the Reds got to the four-time Cy Young Award winner for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pena's second homer, a two-run shot off Maddux, capped the uprising and gave the Reds a 6-4 lead. D'Angelo Jimenez hit a two-run homer and Sean Casey had an RBI double earlier in the inning. "He threw me outside in my first at-bat," Pena said. "I was looking for one pitch inside." Maddux was roughed up for six runs and nine hits in six innings as he lost for the second time in three decisions in September. In the eighth, Sammy Sosa belted a long solo homer and the Cubs looked like they would tie the game when pinch hitter Ben Grieve singled into center field with two aboard and one out. But Pena came up throwing and gunned down Grudzielanek at the plate. "It was Pena's night," Chicago manager Dusty Baker said. "I don't think Grudzielanek had the best jump but you have to send him on a ground ball hit up the middle like that. It was a great throw." Pena also hit a solo homer in the fifth and Casey went 3-for-4 for the Reds, who stopped a three-game losing streak. "I felt pretty good but I left some changeups, up," Maddux said. "I don't know why. I made some bad pitches and they didn't miss." Pena was pleased to be able to star in a game alongside one of the best players to come out of his native Dominican Republic in Sosa. "In my mind that's one thing I want to be, the best player from my country," Pena said. "He's worked so hard," Cincinnati manager Dave Miley said. "Look at what he's done since May. He has what 26 home runs and about 70 RBI." Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang (9-9) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out six. Danny Graves got the final five outs for his 41st save in 50 chances. Moises Alou belted a solo homer and a two-run shot for the Cubs, who remained one-half game behind San Francisco in the National League wild card race. "That's what hurts the most," Baker said. "We have another opportunity tomorrow." Graves struck out Alou to cement the victory on an emotional night when numerous Cubs fans drowned out the Reds faithful. "Alou owns me," Graves said. "It was exciting. The fans were cheering for the Cubs all game but in the end, it was definitely loud and our fans supported us. It was a playoff atmosphere." Adding to the emotion, the Reds honored long-time broadcaster and former player Joe Nuxhall before the game. Cincinnati legends Tony Perez, Johnny Bench and Sparky Anderson were in attendance. "There was a lot of emotion," Casey said. "It was kind of neat the guys were fired up. You look at a guy like Tony Perez and the legendary players. We want to carry on the tradition and these games mean something. We are playing the role of the spoiler now and that's what we need to do."
