Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux threw seven scoreless innings as the Chicago Cubs stayed in the thick of the National League wild card race with a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Maddux (14-9) took advantage of five early runs scored off Pirates rookie starter Frank Brooks (0-1). The win moved the Cubs to within one-half game of the wild card-leading San Francisco Giants, who were idle Monday. The importance of the win increased after the game when the club announced that it will be without shortstop Nomar Garciaparra for at least the next five games due to a groin strain. "We got the MRI results back and it verifies what I thought was wrong," Garciaparra said. "I have a mild groin strain, nothing is torn, but it will take some time. I will miss at least five to seven games. From there we will re-evaluate it again. I can't say for sure when I did it, but it was coming on for about a week." Recording his 303rd career win, Maddux yielded five hits and issued one walk. The win was his first at Wrigley Field since July 22, a span of five starts. "The key was defense," Maddux said. "Everybody was making nice plays. Sometimes you can throw it down the middle and the other team hits it hard but it goes right at somebody. Well, that happened a lot tonight." "He's a future Hall of Famer and he pitched good," Pittsburgh shortstop Jack Wilson said about Maddux. "Everything we hit went right at somebody. He's always tough and when he's gets a five-run cushion it's even tougher to come back on him." Derrek Lee drove in three runs and Sammy Sosa added two for Chicago, which posted its third consecutive win over the Pirates. Lee delivered a two-run single and Sosa hit his 30th home run of the season in a five-run first, chasing Brooks from the contest. "He (Brooks) did get some balls up and that helped us and that opened up some things and we were off to the races," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "The main thing was that Greg was sharp and we played excellent defense." Sosa, who collected his 569th career homer, has reached the 30-homer plateau in each of the last 10 seasons. Brooks, who made his first major league start after six relief appearances, gave up five runs - four earned - and three hits in the first - his only inning. "Obviously it wasn't very good, when you only go one inning," Brooks said. "I hoped to go at least four or five innings, but I left my pitches up and they just hit them." Daryle Ward got Pittsburgh on the board in the eighth inning with a two-run double. The Pirates have dropped five straight road games.
