Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs appeared to receive a gift from first base umpire Mark Wegner leading off the bottom of the ninth. Corey Patterson made sure they did not fail to take advantage. Patterson's two-out, two-run homer off Luis Vizcaino as the Cubs posted a 4-2 triumph over the reeling Milwaukee Brewers, whose season-high skid reached eight games. After Chicago closer LaTroy Hawkins failed to close out a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Mark Grudzielanek led of the bottom of the frame with a fly ball that appeared to land just foul down the right field line. But Wegner ruled the ball fair, and Grudzielanek reached third on Brady Clark's throwing error. "I'd say it was at least one baseball foul," Clark said. "That's what I saw and I saw what I saw - it was foul. It's a shame to go down like that when the umpire blows a call." "It's hard to tell with the bullpen out there and other stuff out there," Grudzielanek said. "It was coming down and the wind was blowing back towards fair, so all you can do is keep running there." Brewers manager Ned Yost came out to protest the call but was ejected. "He said it was on the line, but I don't know what line he was looking at," Yost said. "That's a very good umpiring crew that was out there but Mark just missed a call. But that did not beat us." Vizcaino (4-4) appeared as if he would get out of the jam after inducing Paul Bako and Todd Walker to pop out, but Patterson secured the Cubs' seventh win in eight games with his 18th homer, a shot that easily cleared the wall in right field. "I got two strikes on me and just said, 'Try to step out and take a couple of deep breaths,'" Patterson said. "He just threw a ball in the zone that I liked. It was down ... and I was able to get a good swing on it." Hawkins (3-4) allowed a leadoff single to Trent Durrington in the top of ninth but appeared as if he would record his 20th save in 25 opportunities after retiring Craig Counsell and Brady Clark. But Chris Magruder hit a double past Sammy Sosa into the ivy in right-center, allowing Durrington to score the tying run. Moises Alou - who had a career-high six RBI in Tuesday's 13-4 victory - homered for the 32nd time this season with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, sending a pitch from Vizcaino just over the fence in left field to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. Chicago starter Greg Maddux, who entered the game 3-0 against the Brewers this season and 10-2 in his career, yielded one run and four hits in eight innings, striking out eight and walking one. Brewers counterpart Doug Davis allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. "Just pretty much been the same the last three or four starts," Davis said. "It's frustrating, the guys have been battling their (tails) off and he we haven't got any breaks. Everyone saw that ball go foul, but it's an example of how everything just keeps going wrong." The Brewers took a 1-0 lead on Clark's RBI single in the fourth before Bako evened the score one frame later on his first homer since July 7, 2002. "Just happy to get it at this point, an inside-the-park (homer) would have done it for me," Bako said. "But it's good to contribute and help out getting a big win."
