Game StoryMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux bounced back from a rocky start while the Chicago Cubs rocked Chris Capuano. Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee each hit three-run homers and Sammy Sosa added a solo blast to power the Cubs to a 9-6 victory over the Brewers in the rubber game of their three-game series. Maddux (12-8) improved his career record to 10-2 against Milwaukee, including 3-0 this season. After yielding five runs and five hits in the first three innings, Maddux gave up just one hit over the next four innings, retiring 13 of the last 14 batters. "Runs make you look good, and we got a bunch of runs today," Maddux said of his 301st career win. "We've got a lot of guys that can hit. As a pitcher, you just try to last five, six, seven innings and let them do their thing." LaTroy Hawkins pitched a hitless ninth for his 19th save in 23 opportunities. The win pulled the Cubs within one-half game of idle San Francisco in the National League wild card race. "The team that wants it the most is going to get it," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "Our offense bailed everybody out today. It was a big win." Ramirez snapped a 5-5 tie with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, launching a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall. Nomar Garciaparra led off with a single and Moises Alou walked before Ramirez hit his 24th home run of the season. Russell Branyan, who hit two homers and drove in five runs for Milwaukee in Wednesday's 7-5 loss, had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. It was not a happy 26th birthday for Capuano (6-7), who returned to the rotation after missing a start due to elbow soreness and surrendered a career-high eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. "I felt healthy, I felt strong, and I had pretty good stuff," Capuano said. "But because I wasn't throwing enough strikes, I wasn't able to get ahead of a lot of hitters. Even if you have good stuff, when you're pitching behind in the count with big league hitters, you're in trouble." It was also not a happy 50th birthday for Brewers manager Ned Yost, who watched his team lose after jumping out to a 4-1 lead against Maddux. "It's always tough when you get four off a guy like Greg Maddux and you don't hold the lead," Yost said. "Home runs killed us." Scott Podsednik led off the bottom of the first with a one-hop grounder that deflected off Maddux's right calf. The 13-time Gold Glove winner retrieved the ball, but his throw pulled Lee off first base for his first error since April 9, 2003. "It (Maddux's calf) was sore all game, so it was a gutsy performance," Baker said. Podsednik stole second and scored on a single by Bill Hall. Lyle Overbay followed with a single and, one out later, Geoff Jenkins hit his 19th home run of the season. Capuano walked Mark Grudzielanek and Tom Goodwin before Lee hit his 26th home run of the season in the second inning, tying the game at 4-4. Sosa, who recently moved down to fifth in the batting order, hit his 27th home run of the season in the third inning.
