Game StorySAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- For a change, Barry Bonds got to watch someone else achieve a milestone. Greg Maddux became the 22nd pitcher in major league history to win 300 games as the Chicago Cubs posted an 8-4 triumph over the San Francisco Giants. After failing to reach the historic plateau in his previous start against Philadelphia on Sunday, Maddux struggled in this one, allowing four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. But the four-time Cy Young Award winner got enough offensive support from his teammates to become the first National League pitcher to reach 300 wins since Steve Carlton on September 23, 1983. "It's pretty special," Maddux said. "I like to look ahead, I never really look back. When I'm done playing, I'll look back and I'm pretty sure I'll pat myself on the back then. But right now, it's about my next start and the rest of the season." While Maddux remained modest, his teammates expressed their excitement. "It's the best thing I've ever seen in sports," said lefthander Kent Mercker, who recorded two outs in the sixth inning. "I'm glad I got to pitch today and I'm glad I didn't screw it up. He's the best I've ever seen. He's got to be top five of all time. It's unbelievable. I'm so happy I was here to watch it live, every pitch." "To me, of all the teammates I've played with, it couldn't happen to a better person," Cubs starter Matt Clement added. "He cares about winning and his profession. It's a number, when you start pitching, you can't even comprehend." Cubs southpaw Mike Remlinger, who tossed a scoreless inning, was thrilled for his two-time teammate. "You appreciate how prepared he is and how much he works at it," said Remlinger, who pitched with Maddux while with the Atlanta Braves. "He knows how to pitch. To be a part of it is phenomenal. To have that success is amazing." "This guy is always studying, trying to get the edge," Chicago manager Dusty Baker added. "He studies - he studies opposing managers, he studies me, he studies opposing hitters, different situations." The second pitcher to win his 300th game in a Cubs uniform, Maddux (11-7) fell into an early hole when Bonds lifted a sacrifice fly in the first inning. In the third, Edgardo Alfonzo's RBI single and a run-scoring triple by A.J. Pierzynski staked San Francisco to a 3-0 lead. "I didn't really pitch all that good today, obviously," said Maddux, who threw 29 pitches in the first. "I think it was actually a good inning to only give up one run. When you're not locating your fastball like you like to, you have to try other things." But Chicago came back against righthander Brad Hennessey, who was making his major league debut. Todd Walker stroked a two-run double in the fourth and a single by Aramis Ramirez in the fifth tied the game at 3-3. Derrek Lee followed with a two-base hit, plating Ramirez and putting the Cubs ahead. Corey Patterson's two-run homer in the sixth gave Chicago some breathing room. "(Tyler Walker) was just trying to get it over, but he left it up," Patterson said. "I just got a hold of it. It was just great to contribute and help Greg get his 300th." After the Giants scored a run in the bottom half and threatened in the seventh and eighth, Moises Alou hit a two-run blast in the ninth to secure the win for Maddux. "It's an honor to be a part of this, and to be here and witness it is very special," said newly acquired Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. "You have so much respect for him, you want him to get it. We went out and did our jobs and he went out and did his. We're honored as baseball players to be a part of it." "He's going to stay in the game and win," San Francisco manager Felipe Alou said of Maddux. "Even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he's still going to win ballgames. He does everything a good pitcher can possibly do." Brought up from the minor leagues Friday, Hennessey (0-1) was just as ineffective as Maddux, surrendering four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings with a walk and five strikeouts. "Once I got to the mound, I was fine," Hennessey said. "There were nerves there, but I felt good. It was nice to get it over with. I take some positives from it, it's definitely something to build on." "That kid gave us a good game," Felipe Alou said. "I told him he's going to be back out there. He did good, had good presence on the mound." Alfonzo had three hits and scored twice for San Francisco, which has lost seven of its last 10 games. Ray Durham recorded his 1,500th career hit with a triple in the first inning.
