Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chicago Cubs' fans may have missed out on seeing Greg Maddux make history but Nomar Garciaparra's first hit with the team came in memorable fashion. After Maddux came up just short in his bid for his 300th win, Chicago scored four times in the seventh - capped by Garciaparra's run-scoring single - and rallied for a 6-3 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. Maddux was looking to become just the 22nd pitcher and first in the National League in more than 20 years, to reach the milestone but left trailing 3-2 after six innings. After Kent Mercker (2-0) got the final out of the seventh, the Cubs rallied to get the veteran righthander off the hook. "You do what you've got to do," Maddux said of coming up short in his first chance at the milestone. "You get ready for your game, and you go out and pitch, and you don't get caught up in it. I'm going to enjoy the off-day tomorrow. Throw on the side in two or three days and get ready to pitch when it's my turn. It's what I do. Just go out and do it." Mark Grudzielanek doubled home Sammy Sosa, pinch hitter Jose Macias gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead with a run-scoring single and Michael Barrett - another pinch hitter - followed with a sacrifice fly. Garciaparra, who was hitless in his first three at-bats, singled into left field for a three-run advantage. "I think what started it wasn't really myself, but the other guys in the lineup getting their job done," Garciaparra said of his hit. "That kind of got the momentum going. Then I was able to help keep the momentum going, get those runs, and allow our pitchers to come out there and just feel comfortable knowing that they had the lead, and that all they had to do was go do their job." Garciaparra was acquired Saturday from the Boston Red Sox as part of a four-team trade. "It was great," Garciaparra said. "My first game, not only in the uniform, but to be able to play in front of these fans. And the ovation I got, things like that you'll never forget. I know I won't. I can't thank them enough, and I hope they know how much I appreciate it." "That was perfect," Sosa of the Garciaparra acquisition. "(General manager) Jim Hendry really did a great thing. He brought us another fantastic player. He's going to help us become a winner." Ryand Dempster, Mercker, Kyle Farnsworth, Mike Remlinger and LaTroy Hawkins combined on three scoreless innings in relief with Hawkins working the ninth for his 16th save in 20 chances. "We got a zero in the seventh inning, the bullpen clutched up," Maddux said. "Merk made some nice pitches right there. It was nice to see." Phillies starter Randy Wolf (4-7) tired in the seventh and allowed five runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Philadelphia has lost five of six overall and eight of its last 10 road games. "You know you need to score more than three runs here when the wind is blowing out, that's a given," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "Early it was just howling out." Philadelphia bolted to a 2-0 lead in the first on homers by Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu. But Maddux settled down and Chicago scored twice in the second on Sosa's 23rd homer and Aramis Ramirez's fourth homer in the last the last three games. The Phillies pushed across a run in the fifth when Marlon Byrd was hit by a pitch, bunted over and scored on Rollins' base hit to right. Maddux hit for himself in the fifth and faced little trouble in the sixth. But Baker opted to pull him for Dempster to start the seventh. "I think I could have started the seventh," Maddux said. "I don't know if I could have made it out of it or not. I was pretty much done after the fifth or sixth. I'm just glad we won. It was important that we won." Sosa opened the bottom of the seventh against Wolf with a long double and Ramirez walked. After Derrek Lee struck out, Grudzielanek doubled to right to score Sosa with the tying run. Rheal Cormier took over for Wolf and Macias, hitting for Paul Bako, singled to left for a 4-3 lead. Barrett hit for Mercker and Todd Jones came on for Cormier but did not stem the tide, allowing a sacrifice fly and hitting Corey Patterson. Garciaparra then blooped his single to left. Philadelphia loaded the bases with none out in the eighth but Mike Lieberthal and pinch hitter Chase Utley struck out and Jason Michaels popped out. The Phillies brought the tying run to the plate against Hawkins with two outs in the ninth but Pat Burrell struck out to end the game.
