Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux is a step closer to where Ben Sheets one day hopes to be. Maddux outdueled Sheets for career win No. 299 as the Chicago Cubs posted a 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. A four-time Cy Young Award winner, Maddux (10-7) moved within one victory of becoming the 22nd pitcher ever to win 300 games. The veteran righthander limited the Brewers to one run and four hits in six innings, walked one and struck out six. Maddux will have a chance to secure win No. 300 on Sunday, when he is scheduled to start at home against Philadelphia. He said he will feel a little more pressure in that start. "Obviously it's human nature to feel that way a little bit," Maddux said. "Luckily, we're trying to put ourselves in a position to go into the postseason so it's not about me." "It would be more special when he gets 300," Cubs second baseman Todd Walker said. "You think about that kind of stuff. "I happened to be on the field when Molitor got his 3,000th hit and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Those are the kinds of things you remember." The 38-year-old Maddux, who endured a slow start this season, has won his last three starts and improved to 4-1 in his last five outings. His latest victory also gave him 17 straight seasons with at least 10 wins. "I've seen him pitch at Atlanta for a bunch of those wins," said Brewers manager Ned Yost, who was coach with the Braves for 10 seasons. Maddux's also got the best of Sheets, a former Olympian who has emerged as one of the game's top young pitchers. Sheets (9-8) gave up four runs and seven hits in seven innings. The 26-year-old righthander, who is 257 wins behind Maddux, struck out eight without a walk en route to his third straight loss. "It's no secret, it's location, location, location," Sheets said. "I thought we had as good as chance as anybody to win tonight." Recently acquired Russell Branyan hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Brewers, who lost their season-high fifth straight game. The Cubs gave Maddux an early lead to work with in the first as Sammy Sosa delivered an RBI double and Todd Walker plated a run with a single. Walker and Sosa belted solo homers in the third, pushing the lead to 4-0.
