Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux did not need much offensive support from his Chicago Cubs teammates to pick up win No. 298. He got it - and then some. Aramis Ramirez hit a grand slam, Moises Alou homered twice and Mark Grudzielanek added a three-run shot as the Cubs routed the Cincinnati Reds, 13-2, to cap a sweep of their two-game series. The Cubs entered the game having scored 183 of their 430 runs (42.6 percent) on homers, and drove in 10 of their 13 runs Thursday by hitting the ball over the wall. "I'm getting tired of people saying that's the only way we score," Alou said of the Cubs, who entered the day 10 games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central Division. "We've got a lot of great hitters on this team, and I believe that we're still going to win the division. St. Louis will get cold. It's up to us to play good baseball and be there when the opportunity presents itself." "Our guys really stood up big these last two days," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We had tough series against the Cardinals, but that didn't stop us from taking care of business against the Reds. Hopefully, we'll stay hot." Coming off his first shutout in three years, a 5-0 win over Milwaukee on Saturday in which he yielded six hits, Maddux (9-7) relinquished just four hits - including two solo homers to Javier Valentin - as he moved within two wins of becoming the 22nd pitcher to win 300 games. "This is not about personal goals or victories. It's about getting another ring," said Maddux, who won a championship with Atlanta nine years ago. "My greatest day in baseball is when we won the World Series in 1995. That's what I play for, the chance for winning with the team." Maddux was pleased with his second straight stellar performance. "I just have a good rhythm at this point," Maddux said. "To be honest, I don't think I'm doing anything different than I was when I was getting hammered. Maybe I have a little better command." "You have to be very patient with him. He works both sides of the plate so well," Grudzielanek said. "When I've faced him, I always looked for a pitch on the outside of the plate and try to drive it to right field. I'll tell you one thing, he's fun to play behind." Alou, who hit a solo homer off Reds starter Cory Lidle (6-8) in the second inning, gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead with a two-run shot in the third inning. Grudzielanek's blast made it 6-1 in the fourth, and Ramirez's grand slam off Ryan Wagner in the sixth opened a 12-2 cushion. Lidle was rocked for eight runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. "A lot of the hits I gave up, I don't know if they were good pitches or bad pitches," Lidle said. "I know they had some balls that weren't hit very hard that just found holes and stuff. But overall, I felt good and didn't have any results at all." "There were some balls up," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "I mean, they hit a solo, two-run, three-run, and a grand slam during the game. I guess the best way to put it was Cory wasn't sharp." The Reds lost for the fifth time in eight games. "I'm happy on the one side (with my two homers), but on the other side, I'm pretty frustrated losing that kind of game," Valentin said. "We had to battle, especially with this team. I know we can push, we can play better, but hopefully we can go to Pittsburgh and take two out of three (this weekend)."
