Game StoryCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux no doubt wishes July 17 came more than once a year. Turning back the clock, the 38-year-old Maddux tossed a six-hitter for his first shutout in exactly three years and first complete game in exactly one as the Chicago Cubs posted a 5-0 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers. Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou smacked solo homers against fellow All-Star Ben Sheets and Corey Patterson belted a two-run shot off Luis Vizcaino for the Cubs, who had lost four of their first five meetings with the Brewers this season. Maddux (8-7), who tossed his 104th complete game and 35th shutout, kept the ball down throughout, inducing 17 groundouts from the Brewers. The four-time Cy Young Award winner struck out four without a walk en route to career win No. 297. "That was absolutely vintage Maddux," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "He was surgical with his stuff. He was running balls, cutting balls, sinking balls. He had a great changeup. He was also strong on both sides of the plate. If he made any mistakes, I didn't see them." "I just tried not to get lazy out there," Maddux said. "It was a perfect day to pitch. It was nice and cool and the wind was blowing in. I did make my fair share of mistakes, but luckily they hit them at people." The veteran righthander's last shutout was a 4-0 triumph over Tampa Bay on July 17, 2001. His last complete game came in a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets a year ago. Both those efforts came with the Atlanta Braves. "That was the Greg Maddux of old," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He was real sharp today. He threw a lot of ground-ball outs. More importantly, he saved our bullpen. Those guys were a little tired out there." Maddux also rapped a single to center off Sheets in the fifth inning. "Maddux pitched a great game, but I was only worried about him when he came up to hit," Sheets said. "I don't like the idea he got a single off of me on an 0-2 pitch. I might want to try to do better next time." Sheets (9-6), who led the U.S. to the gold medal in the 2000 Olympics, also was sharp, striking out eight against one walk in seven innings. But he saw a 16-inning scoreless streak snapped by Sosa's homer with two outs in the first and he allowed Alou's homer in the fourth that made it 2-0. "I made so many mistakes," said Sheets, who allowed six hits. "I was lucky it wasn't more like five or six home runs. That's how far off I was." On July 5, Sheets yielded four hits in seven scoreless innings in a win over the Cubs. "Last time he pitched unbelievable against us," Sosa said. "This time, we came back and prepared a little bit more. We went out there and battled like men." The Cubs added three runs against Vizcaino in the eighth. Todd Walker singled, was sacrificed over and scored on two wild pitches, the latter on ball four to Alou. Patterson followed with a two-run homer.
