Game StoryST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals are distancing themselves from the Chicago Cubs and the rest of the National League Central Division. Jason Marquis came within three outs of his first career complete game and Albert Pujols homered as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to seven games with a 6-1 victory. A surprise since coming over in an offseason trade from Atlanta that included J.D. Drew, Marquis (9-4) gave up one run and nine hits in eight-plus innings to match the longest outing of his career. He walked two and struck out two in improving to 6-0 in his last seven starts. "My mechanics have been where I want them to be," Marquis said. "I'm just keeping the ball down. Our defense is making some good plays for me. I just feel real comfortable with my mechanics. I'm getting on the same page as the catchers the last month. Marquis last worked into the ninth inning on October 6, 2001 while with Atlanta. "He kept the ball down pretty good," said Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux, who was a teammate of Marquis in Atlanta. "It seemed like he was getting a lot of ground balls. He has a good sinker now. He didn't throw that, that much in Atlanta. I think he threw it every pitch now. It's a good pitch. The Cardinals ran their home winning streak to nine games for the first time since 2001 and opened a seven-game lead over the second-place Cubs in the NL Central. The teams meet just four more times, none after July 20. "I wouldn't say we're feeling pressure from them," Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee said. "We don't want to be seven games back. There's still a lot of games to play." "It's still July. It's nice that everybody is hyping this series up, said Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds, who homered for the third consecutive game. "You have to stay focused and keep playing. That's a good team over there and they're not going away. Pujols, Edgar Renteria, Edmonds and Tony Womack all hit solo homers for the Cardinals, who have outscored the opposition by a lopsided 40-11 in winning the first seven games of their nine-game home stand. "We played good baseball," Cardinal manager Tony La Russa said. "That's one thing about baseball. It's meant to be played right and we're doing a lot of things right. We just have to keep playing because you can't lose that edge." Maddux (7-7) gave up four runs and eight hits - three homers - in six innings. Maddux allowed three homers in a game for the third time this season and ran his season total to 20. "Renteria, Edmonds, I tip my hat. They got me," Maddux said. Man, I didn't think they were that bad of pitches. Pujols' pitch I left that up. It's not surprising that he hit that out. The Cubs have scored just three runs during a four-game losing streak. "There's not a whole bunch to say," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "It's kind of like Groundhog day, it was like the day before and the day before that too. We just have to keep battling."
