Game Story

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Aramis Ramirez and the Chicago Cubs cooled off their division rivals and remained red hot in the process. Ramirez's third hit of the game, a two-run double off Jason Isringhausen in the eighth inning lifted the Cubs to their ninth victory in 10 games, a 5-4 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis lost consecutive games for the first time since a three-game losing streak from May 22-26 and saw their lead over Chicago in the National League Central Division shrink to one game. "I just wanted to put the ball in play. I didn't want to strike out in that situation, with the tying run on base," said Ramirez who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. "I wanted to put the ball in play and see what happens." "That was a great come-from-behind victory, especially when your down in this ballpark to these guys," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. The Cubs came back on more than one occasion in the contest. Derrek Lee's 10th homer of the season, off Cardinals' starter Jason Marquis in the seventh inning, tied the game, 3-3. In the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals regained the lead on an RBI single by Tony Womack, but the advantage was short-lived. Mark Grudzielanek led off the eighth with a single and was sacrificed over by Ramon Martinez. Isringhausen (3-2) came on and got Moises Alou to ground out to third, but walked Sammy Sosa on a full count pitch. Ramirez then knocked in two with a double to the alley in right-center. "I got ahead of him (Sosa) then I just didn't make another pitch to finish him. It's that simple," Isringhausen said. "I'm happy with the way I threw. I made a good pitch to Aramis, he hit it off the end of the bat and it landed in no man's land." "Their third baseman had a big night," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "Giving him a chance to beat us isn't what we had in mind." Cubs starter Greg Maddux was roughed up for three runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Scott Rolen, his 71st RBI, and run-scoring singles by Reggie Sanders and Ray Lankford. Maddux settled down and retired the next 13 batters. "It was just one of those things. I thought I made some pretty good pitches in the first inning and they still hit them," Maddux said. "You tip your hat and you move on. You just try to hold them and hope the boys come back." Kyle Farnsworth (3-3) tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings to earn the win. Farnsworth relieved Maddux in the seventh and retired Renteria on a ground out with runners at second and third. "My strength is to just go after people. They know that. They have to beat me with my best stuff," Farnsworth said. "You can't pitch scared. You have to be aggressive and that's what I did." LaTroy Hawkins induced pinch hitter Jim Edmonds, who was a late scratch because of a strained groin, to pop out to left with the tying run on first for his ninth save of the season. Cardinals starter Jason Marquis pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up four runs and six hits while striking out a season-high eight. "It was one of my better outings of the year," Marquis said. "I had command of all my stuff. I felt great out there. Obviously a couple of my mistakes they hit out of the ballpark." Marquis allowed homers to Lee and Moises Alou. The Cubs extended their road winning streak to seven games, which is their longest since 1971.
