Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs have picked an opportune time to put it all together. Greg Maddux tossed 6 1/3 superb innings and Corey Patterson ignited a two-run seventh-inning rally with a bunt single as the Cubs recorded their fifth straight win, a 4-1 triumph over the Houston Astros. In the middle of a stretch where all but nine of its next 31 games are against National League Central Division opponents, Chicago continues to roll. The Cubs are 5-1 on their seven-game road trip and won for the ninth time in their last 12 games overall. Maddux (6-5) kept the momentum going with career victory No. 295. He allowed a run and eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. He is within five victories of becoming the 22nd player to reach the 300-win plateau and would be the first NL hurler to achieve the feat since Steve Carlton in 1983. "He had as good stuff tonight as he's had all year," Cubs catcher Paul Bako said. "Without question he's getting better. His location was good." "The pitchers on this team are keeping us in the game," Maddux said. "We're winning a lot of close games." The 38-year-old righthander improved to 24-10 against the Astros. After Francis Beltran got an out in the seventh, Mike Remlinger logged 1 1/3 hitless innings. LaTroy Hawkins struck out one in a perfect ninth for his seventh save in 10 opportunities. Patterson started the seventh-inning rally with a bunt base hit. Paul Bako knotted the contest, 1-1, with a double to right and Todd Walker gave Chicago the lead for good with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. "I was trying to get on of course," Patterson said. "Get yourself seeing the ball hit the bat." Todd Hollandsworth had an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Derrek Lee's sacrifice fly. Houston starter Tim Redding (3-6) took a tough loss, allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings. "I was fortunate that it wasn't worse than it was, especially after the fifth inning" Redding said. "I didn't feel I was all there tonight." Houston is 4-4 against the Cubs in 2004. The Cubs collected their 16th come-from-behind win of the season, including three on this road trip. They scored three runs in the ninth to beat Houston 4-2 on Tuesday. "You'd like to start early," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We've been starting late, lately." "We're all relaxed, having fun," said Patterson, who made a long running catch on Morgan Ensberg with a runner on and two out in the eighth to kill Houston's last threat. "It all starts with pitching and defense." Houston is 20-22 since May 1. "We believed this was a good team when we left spring training and we still should believe it," said Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell, who went 3-for-4 a day after getting a cortisone shot in his right shoulder. "Every team goes through these funks."
