Game StoryANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Pitted against a future Hall of Famer, John Lackey flashed some of his substantial potential. Lackey allowed seven hits in seven innings and Jose Guillen and Vladimir Guerrero drove in runs as the Anaheim Angels did enough against Greg Maddux to edge the Chicago Cubs, 3-2. Lackey (4-7) has been one of the bigger disappointments in the American League since winning Game Seven of the 2002 World Series as a rookie. He was 10-16 last season and entered this game winless in his last five starts. The 25-year-old righthander allowed two runs, walked just one and struck out six. He improved to 4-1 in six interleague starts. "I think a pitcher has a little of an advantage in these interleague games, because a lot of the guys will take a couple of pitches until they know what you got which gives you the opportunity to get ahead in the count," Lackey said. "I didn't notice anything different from him when I saw him pitch against us in Game Seven," said Cubs manager Dusty Baker, who managed San Francisco against Lackey in the 2002 World Series. "He still has good command and works the zone well." After Scot Shields struck out two in the eighth, Francisco Rodriguez cruised through the ninth for his fourth save in seven opportunities. "I like coming in to close out the game, I have more adrenaline being the closer," Rodriguez said. "I like it more and have more fun." "Rodriguez's stuff is just electric, and he's going to be a good closer some day," Baker added. Chicago led 2-1 entering the fourth, but Anaheim scored twice. Guillen plated Guerrero with a triple and scored on a single by rookie Casey Kotchman. "I got a pitch up in the zone and was able to hit it off the wall," Guillen said. "The ball just seemed to keep carrying. Maddux is a great pitcher and it's just good to get a key hit in the game to help our team, but it's better against a guy like Maddux." "Guillen hit the ball good off of me, I left the pitch up more than I wanted to and hit it off the wall," Maddux said. "They got the big hit when they needed to, and we came up a little short." Maddux (5-5) remained stuck on 294 career victories. He allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings, did not walk a batter and struck out six. "Maddux is one of the best pitchers ever, and for me to just go out and get the win over him is a good feeling," Lackey said. "I have a lot more to do in my career to even be mentioned in the same sentence as him." Maddux was impressed with Lackey's stuff. "Lackey looked like he had a lot of his stuff working for him tonight, and mixing his pitches well to keep our hitters off-balance," Maddux said. "He is a tough young pitcher, and if he keeps working hard he'll be a top pitcher in the game." Todd Hollandsworth had two of the Cubs' seven hits.
