Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- This time, Rob Mackowiak had no home run magic against the Chicago Cubs. Greg Maddux pitched seven strong innings and LaTroy Hawkins struck out Mackowiak with two runners on in the ninth as the Cubs posted a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the rubber game of their three-game series. Maddux (5-4) allowed just four hits, walked none and struck out six for his 294th career win, including 100 with the Cubs. "(Catcher) Paul Bako called a great game today," said Maddux, who threw 54 of his 75 pitches for strikes. "He kept asking for the right pitch in the right location. My command was good enough that I was able to do that most of the time." "I don't think there was any question that was the best he pitched all year," Bako said. "He had a great combination of command of his pitches and real good movement. His rhythm was unbelievable. That was Greg Maddux at his very best today." Pittsburgh's Ryan Vogelsong (1-6) pitched six scoreless innings before yielding a leadoff home run to former Pirate Aramis Ramirez in the seventh, tying the game at 1-1. Todd Hollandsworth followed with a single and Vogelsong hit Derrek Lee with a pitch. Hollandsworth moved to third on a deep fly to center by Corey Patterson and scored on Michael Barrett's sacrifice fly. "I'm happy that I went six solid innings, but I lost the game for us in the seventh," said Vogelsong, who is 0-6 in 10 starts since his lone win on April 8. "I thought Ramirez's hit was just a fly ball, but it's a home run. Then I gave up a hit to the next guy and it ends up being the winning run." The Cubs added two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Jose Macias and a throwing error by second baseman Abraham Nunez. But even a 4-1 lead was not safe for the Cubs against the Pirates, who have four come-from-behind wins against Chicago this season. And sure enough Mackowiak came to the plate with two runners on and two outs in the ninth. On May 28, Mackowiak hit a game-winning grand slam off Cubs reliever Joe Borowski in the ninth inning in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, Mackowiak blasted a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth inning against Hawkins. This time, Hawkins struck out Mackowiak for his fourth save in six opportunities. "He (Mackowiak) killed us last weekend," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "Hawkins got him this time. Hawkins will get a lot of opportunities to close, but we'll try to mix and match with (Kyle) Farnsworth and (Mike) Remlinger." Earlier in the day, the Cubs placed ailing closer Joe Borowski on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. The Pirates scored their only run in the third inning. Tike Redman hit a bloop single, moved to second on Vogelsong's sacrifice and came home on a two-out single to center by Jason Kendall. Vogelsong made that lead stand through the sixth, retiring 14 of 15 batters after a single by Lee in the second. "We finally got the pitching coming, now the offense is not coming," said Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon, who watched the game from the press box while serving the second game of a two-game suspension.
