Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Lance Berkman remained on fire while Jeff Bagwell is beginning to heat up. Berkman homered for the seventh time in nine games and Bagwell belted just his second of the month as the Houston Astros posted a 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Since May 18, Berkman has been a major force, hitting .441 (15-for-34) with six homers and 12 RBI. He continued his torrid pace in this one, going 2-for-4 with his 12th blast of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning that gave the Astros a 5-1 lead. "I feel like I'm back to normal," Berkman said. "Obviously, I'm swinging the bat well. I never felt like this at all last year." Bagwell, who had just one homer since April 21, got Houston on the board with an RBI single in the first. With one out and one on in the third, Bagwell deposited a 3-1 pitch by Greg Maddux over the left field wall for a 3-0 cushion. "Maddux pitched me like he always does - fastball, slider, changeup," Bagwell said. "I hit a changeup for the single and a fastball for the home run." The veteran first baseman, whose next game will be the 2,000th of his career, tied Billy Williams for 33rd on the all-time homer list with 426. Jeff Kent followed with his seventh homer, giving the Astros their first back-to-back homers of the season. The shot also extended Kent's hitting streak to 12 games. Brad Lidge (1-3) struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth as Houston used five relievers after Andy Pettitte left the game. Pettitte, who spent time on the disabled list last month with a strained pitching elbow, lasted just four innings due to a strained left forearm. "It felt tight in that area before the game, even in the bullpen," Pettitte said. "I figured, no big deal. For some reason, in the fourth inning, it got more than tight. There's no doubt it's calmed down since I walked off the mound." "He'll go to the doctor and get it checked again (Thursday)," Houston manager Jimy Williams said. "Three or four starts ago, we had a conversation, told him we wouldn't go over 100 pitches, build up his arm strength." Maddux (3-4) fell to 22-10 lifetime against the Astros, surrendering five runs and nine hits in five innings. "I pitched like (garbage)," he said. "I made some mistakes and they took advantage." With Houston holding a 5-1 lead, Todd Hollandsworth halved the Cubs' deficit with a two-run homer in the sixth. But a squeeze by pinch hitter Orlando Palmeiro in the bottom of the inning plated Richard Hidalgo, giving the Astros a three-run edge.
