Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Moises Alou hit another big home run against his father, but Neifi Perez got the last laugh. The light-hitting second baseman, who came in batting just .202, hit a two-out, two-run homer off Joe Borowski in the top of the 10th inning as the shorthanded San Francisco Giants posted a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Borowski (2-2) appeared to be cruising after retiring the first two batters in the 10th, but walked Michael Tucker. Perez followed with his first homer of the season in his 150th at-bat, giving San Francisco, which played without Barry Bonds, Ray Durham and Jeffrey Hammonds, a victory in the rubber game of the three-game series. "I'm working harder than I ever have in eight years in the big leagues," said Perez, who hit his first lefthanded homer since May 31, 2002. "I'm taking batting practice early now and doing what I'm supposed to do. But lately it seems like when I hit it even hard somebody catches it." Perez's shot upstaged Alou, who tied the game, 3-3, with a two-run blast off Felix Rodriguez in the seventh that landed on Waveland Avenue beyond the left field wall. "I hope it's nothing personal, but he (Perez) hurt us when he was in Colorado and a few other times in the clutch," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "You know when he goes up there he's swinging and not taking anything." On Wednesday, Alou hit a game-winning homer off Jim Brower in the 10th to give the Cubs a 4-3 victory. "I think he is just trying to keep doing what he has been doing in the big leagues for awhile, but when I went to the mound I told our people not to give him a pitch to hit," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "It was a slider (from Rodriguez) that stayed flat." Rodriguez recovered to shut down the Cubs in the eighth and Matt Herges (1-2) followed with two scoreless innings to record the win. Borowski, whose ERA climbed to 6.35, was booed as he walked off the field. "I put it over the plate and that's where they like it," Borowski said. "If I'm going to give it up, I'd rather give it up right away instead of getting two quick outs and then it seems like I hit a wall." Giants starter Dustin Hermanson blanked the Cubs through five innings before tiring in the sixth. He was lifted after Todd Hollandsworth reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second with two outs. "You hate to admit when you tired but after the fifth I kind of hit a wall," Hermanson said. "We just haven't played in humidity like this yet this year and it took a toll on all of us." With the Giants holding a 3-0 lead, Alou went back to Brower, and it appeared the move would backfire as gave up an RBI single to Derrek Lee and walked Ramon Martinez to load the bases. But Brower got Paul Bako on a fly to center, preserving the Giants' 3-1 lead. The Giants did all their damage with two outs, breaking on top 2-0 in the third. Cubs starter Greg Maddux gave up consecutive two-out singles to J.T. Snow, Marquis Grissom and Pedro Feliz to plate the first run and Grissom scored on a wild pitch. Feliz's solo homer made it 3-0 in the fifth before the Cubs began their comeback in the sixth on Lee's RBI single.
