Game StorySAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- A pair of Chicago Cubs wreaked havoc with the record book while another did the same on the basepaths. Sammy Sosa belted his 548th career homer, Greg Maddux moved up on the all-time strikeouts list and Jose Macias posted his first career multi-triple game as the Cubs recorded a 6-1 triumph over the San Diego Padres. With the game tied after three innings, Sosa led off the fourth with his ninth homer of the season to give Chicago a 2-1 edge. The blast moved Sosa into a tie with Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt for ninth place on the all-time list. "It's an honor, no question," Sosa said. "I got the chance to tie one of the greatest third basemen in baseball. I still have a way to go. Right now, my mind is not on the long ball. I just want to help my team." The one-run cushion was enough for Maddux (3-3), who yielded just one run and five hits in eight innings. The four-time Cy Young Award winner did not walk a batter but struck out four, giving him 2,800 and moving him ahead of Young for 15th place all-time. "I did?" Maddux asked surprisingly. "I wish I would have gotten the ball. I didn't know." Maddux knew he was on from the outset during his longest outing in eight starts this season. He retired 11 straight batters from the second through fifth innings and threw just 88 pitches - 64 for strikes. "I made some good pitches and got away with some," Maddux said. "I've been feeling pretty good. This was one of those nights where I made some mistakes that turned into outs." Maddux lasted seven innings in just three of his seven previous starts. This outing marked the second time this year he allowed only one run in a game. "He was throwing on the corners all night," said Klesko, a former teammate of Maddux while in Atlanta. "I've seen him do it for years. He's unbelievable to go out and watch. He's an artist." Macias provided insurance for Maddux, leading off the eighth with a three-base hit and scoring on Ramon Martinez's single before ripping a three-run triple in the ninth. Macias was the first Chicago player to have two triples in a game since Michael Tucker on Sept. 19, 2001 accomplished the feat against Cincinnati. "You like to see guys like Macias come through," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He works hard and he's a great teammate." Former Cub Ismael Valdez (3-2) took his second straight loss for San Diego, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings. "I thought Valdez pitched very well," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had good command and kept us in the game." Miguel Ojeda gave San Diego a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning, but Corey Patterson opened the third with his fourth homer to tie it.
