Game StoryCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jason Jennings gave up three home runs but responded with an important one of his own. Jennings pitched six effective innings and hit a two-run homer and Shawn Chacon worked in and out of a jam in the ninth as the Colorado Rockies edged the Chicago Cubs, 4-3. The 2002 National League Rookie of the Year, Jennings allowed three runs and five hits, including back-to-back homers by Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou in the first and another solo blast by Todd Walker in the third. The Rockies answered with a power surge of their own in the fifth. Brad Hawpe singled with two outs before Jennings homered to right field off Greg Maddux (2-3) to tie the game, 3-3. "If Maddux makes a good pitch, I'm not able to take advantage of it, but he just left it over the plate and I was able to hit it out," said Jennings, whose only other homer came in his major league debut on August 23, 2001 when he pitched a shutout against the New York Mets. Jennings (2-4), who walked three and struck out five, had lost his last two starts, allowing 16 earned runs in 10 innings. "Time will tell if he turned the corner, but he took a step in the right direction today," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "It was without a doubt the best ballgame he pitched all year. He didn't let the home runs affect him." The Rockies had gone a season-high three straight games without a homer before Jennings ended the drought. The Cubs could not find the fences after the third inning as the direction of the winds shifted inward. "This is Chicago, where part of the game the wind is blowing out and a half hour later the wind changes," Sosa said. "That didn't cost us the game. We made a few mistakes today." Maddux was charged with four runs and seven hits in seven innings and lost for the first time since April 12. "The results (stink) but I'm happy with the way I'm throwing it," Maddux said. "I know (Jennings) can hit. I knew that two years ago when he came into the league." Colorado went ahead for good in the sixth on an RBI single by Jeromy Burnitz. The hit scored Royce Clayton, who had reached on a bunt single and stole second. Chacon started the ninth and issued a leadoff walk to Todd Hollandsworth, who was replaced by Tom Goodwin on a force play. An errant pickoff throw allowed Goodwin to race to third, but Chacon struck out Walker and Corey Patterson to end the game and earn his eighth save. Colorado scored a run off Maddux in the first when Clayton doubled and came home on a single by Vinny Castilla.
