Game Story

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux had his way on the mound, at 
the plate and on the base paths. He also had plenty of help.

Maddux pitched seven strong innings and contributed to a pair of
runs with a stolen base and an infield single as the Chicago
Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3.

Todd Walker, Derrek Lee and Sammy Sosa all hit two-run homers
for the Cubs, who earned a split of the four-game series.

After allowing 16 runs over 20 innings in his first three
starts, Maddux (2-2) has found his groove in his second stint
with the Cubs.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs and seven
hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six. One of his
mistakes was a solo home run to Albert Pujols in the sixth.

"It's nice to help the team any way I can, and that's baseball,"
Maddux said. "It's about doing whatever you can whenever the 
chance presents itself."

In his last three starts, Maddux has allowed just five runs in
20 innings.

At the plate, Maddux reached on an infield single in the sixth
and came home on Walker's homer that made it 3-1.

Maddux also helped manufacture the first Chicago run in the
third. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Maddux alertly took
second for the sixth stolen base of his career when no one
covered the bag.

"It was a great day for Greg," Cubs' manager Dusty Baker said.
"This guy comes to compete and tries to beat you any way he
can."

Maddux went to third on a wild pitch by former Atlanta teammate 
Jason Marquis (1-2) and Walker followed with an RBI single.

Marquis, a teammate of Maddux with the Atlanta Braves, allowed 
three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

"I pull for him, Maddux said of Marquis. "I watched him come up 
and he's a guy I'm sure I'll continue to pull for as long as 
he's playing."

Marquis, who relished the chance of facing Maddux, also beat out 
a bunt single in the third and recorded a stolen base, his first 
as a major-leaguer, after reaching on a failed sacrifice in the 
fifth. 

"Greg is Greg.  He is always going to be efficient," Marquis
said. "He wants you to swing the bat, he always trusts his
defense and he trusts what he is going to throw." 

Lee homered in the eighth off Mike Lincoln and Sosa connected
off Cal Eldred in the ninth for his sixth homer of the season to
cap the scoring.

Jim Edmonds of the Cards homered in the eighth off Francis
Beltran. The Cards scored just 10 runs in the series.

We could have pitched better, we could have hit better,"
Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa said. We missed opportunities
and it would have been nice to win the series."
