Game StoryPHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks may have lost more than just their game against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Alex Gonzalez belted a go-ahead homer off closer Matt Mantei in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks, who saw slugger Richie Sexson suffer a freak injury in the eighth inning. Sexson injured his left shoulder while checking his swing with one out in the eighth inning against LaTroy Hawkins (1-0). Sexson fell to his knees in pain, immediately left the contest and was replaced by Carlos Baerga, who grounded out. The injury was diagnosed as a strained left shoulder. Sexson will undergo an MRI on Thursday and then a decision will be made whether or not to place him on the disabled list. Steve Finley followed with his third solo homer of the contest to tie the game, 3-3. It was his fourth career three-homer game and first since September 8, 1999 at Milwaukee. But in the bottom of the ninth, Gonzalez sent the first pitch he saw from Mantei (0-3) over the wall in left field for his third homer of the season. "(I was) just trying to make sure I was ready for the first pitch," Gonzalez said. "He's a real tough reliver coming in and got stuff so I didn't want to fall to far behind. I got a pitch, I think he missed his spot and I was able to capitalize on it." Joe Borowski induced Luis Gonzalez to fly out with a man on first to end the contest and notched his fifth save for the Cubs, who avoided being swept and snapped the Diamondbacks' three-game winning streak. The Cubs were without manager Dusty Baker, who was serving a one-game suspension for his actions against Cincinnati on April 16. In that contest, Baker became incensed in the seventh inning when plate umpire C.B. Bucknor took a double away from Cubs pinch hitter Ramon Martinez after ruling that Baker failed to inform him of a double switch. Baker reacted to the umpire's decision by throwing his cap and kicking the dirt. "It was overall a well-played game," said Baker, who watched the game from the clubhouse. "It was a little difficult watching here on this TV - I get more nervous in here than I get out there." Arizona right fielder Danny Bautista extended his career-best and major league-leading hitting streak to 20 games with an eighth-inning double. It is the third-longest streak in team history. Chicago scored twice in the first inning against Arizona rookie Casey Daigle on RBI doubles by Corey Patterson and Aramis Ramirez, but he yielded just one run and one hit over the next six innings. "I threw the ball great," Daigle said. "The velocity felt awesome, the slider felt really good, I threw my changeup late in the game and it felt really good. I got us a chance to win, and that's baseball - we ended up winning the series, we didn't get the sweep, but we will be all right." Finley hit a leadoff homer against Chicago starter Greg Maddux in the second inning and a one-out shot in the sixth before his two-out shot against Hawkins in the eighth. "Fin is just ridiculous-hot," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "That's the way he is - it seems like it happens every year, the closer you get to May 1st, he starts warming up. I think he went right by warm straight to red-hot." "I felt pretty good this whole month but there's nothing to show for it," said Finley, who is batting just .235. "It's nice to get those in." Maddux allowed two runs and six hits in six innings but remained 1-6 against the Diamondbacks, whom he has faced 11 times.
