Game StoryCHICAGO (Ticker) -- From 1986-92, Greg Maddux won 95 games for the Chicago Cubs. More than 11 years later, he made it 96. Pitching on the 90th anniversary of the first game played at Wrigley Field, Maddux allowing one run and seven hits in seven innings as the Cubs defeated the New York Mets, 3-1, for their fourth straight victory. Making his fourth start since returning to Chicago, Maddux (1-2) worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the third without allowing a run. He was in control from there, walking one and striking out eight in his 290th career win and first for the Cubs since September 30, 1992. "I feel good we won and it's nice to help the team for a change, so it's just get ready for your next start," Maddux said. In losing his previous two starts, the 38-year-old righthander was pounded for 11 runs in 10 2/3 innings. But he was sharp in this one, throwing 62 of 82 pitches for strikes in his 33rd career win against the Mets. "He minimized his pitches and worked quickly," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We got just enough hits for him and our bullpen made it stand up." Jae Seo (0-3) pitched well in defeat, allowing four hits in six innings. But he was victimized by two bad pitches - a two-run home run by Moises Alou in the first and a solo shot by Todd Walker in the third. "The two home runs turned out to be costly," Seo said through an interpreter. "They put the team in a hole and I'm not happy I didn't start out as well as I would have liked to." The Mets cut the deficit to 2-1 on Mike Cameron's solo homer in the second and threatened to take the lead after loading the bases in the third. But Maddux snared Mike Piazza's comebacker, starting a home-to-first double play, then struck out Cameron. "Obviously, a frustrating day, but what are you going to do?" Piazza said. "I took some bad swings and (Maddux) made some good pitches and he made a good play (on the comebacker)." "(Piazza) just hit it right to my glove," Maddux said. "It wasn't that great of a pitch or anything. It just went to my glove, so it was nice to get a break there." Maddux gave up two hits over his last four innings before Kyle Farnsworth and Joe Borowski each tossed a scoreless frame. Borowski recorded his third save. "Maddux has a few Gold Gloves for a reason," Mets manager Art Howe said. "He picked it up and turned it into a double play, and after he got Cameron, we didn't mount much." Shane Spencer had three hits for the punchless Mets, who have been held to two runs or fewer in five of their last seven games. Spencer also saved a run in the seventh with a diving catch of Walker's line drive along the left field line. The Cubs were limited to four hits - the first time they won this season with fewer than 10.
