Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Juan Castro's two-run triple off the base of the left-center field wall in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-10 victory over the Chicago Cubs at a wind-blown Wrigley field. With winds gusting out at over 25 miles per hour, the teams combined for 30 hits and seven home runs, including two by Reds left fielder Adam Dunn, who is tied with St. Louis' Scott Rolen for the major league lead with seven. "It was a little crazy, but I don't think the wind helped that much (on my triple) because I hit it pretty good," Castro said. The Reds jumped to an early 3-0 lead on Dunn's first-inning three-run blast off Greg Maddux. The Cubs countered quickly as Sammy Sosa hit solo shots in the first and third off starter Paul Wilson. The latter tied the game, 3-3. Sosa's first homer, his 513th with Chicago and 543rd career, vaulted him past Ernie Banks for the most home runs in Cubs' history. "It's something that makes me very happy considering where I came from then to play baseball in America, it's something my family will enjoy," Sosa said. The Cubs took a 7-5 lead into the sixth inning, but Austin Kearns hammered his first career pinch-hit homer off Maddux to even things at 7-7. Maddux went six innings and gave up seven runs. He is winless in three starts this season and has pitched to an 8.62 ERA. "I feel good about how I'm throwing the ball, but at times I'm not happy about where it's ending up," Maddux said. "I'll do what I have to do to get better and I'll start doing that for the next four days." Dunn, who drove in five runs, added a two-run shot in the seventh to put the Reds up 9-8, but Corey Patterson's RBI double tied it in the bottom half. The scoring slowed until Castro's triple off losing pitcher Joe Borowski (1-1) in the 10th. "The conditions were very windy," Chicago manager Dusty Baker said. "I think we played better wind defense and they played better wind offense. It was a tough day at the park, a very tough day to pitch." Castro entered the game at third base during a seventh inning switch and made the most of his at-bats. "Coming out of spring training I told these guys to stay prepared," Cincinnati manager Dave Miley said. "Juan Castro might play 162 games this year ... I don't know how many at-bats, but (he) had a big hit for us today." Dunn's five previous home runs were solo shots. "It's kind of sad," Dunn joked. "I wanted to be the first guy to go 40 homers, 40 RBI's." Todd Jones (1-0) worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the victory and Danny Graves survived a shaky 10th to notch his sixth save. "Today is a day when you have to let your sinker work, you can't change the game plan because the wind is blowing out 100 miles per hour," Graves said. "It's just wacky here in Wrigley when the wind blows."
