Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- This hardly was the homecoming Greg Maddux anticipated. Maddux surrendered six runs, eight hits and five walks in just 3 2/3 innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates spoiled the Chicago Cubs' home opener with a 13-2 drubbing. Pitching at Wrigley Field as a member of the Cubs for the first time since September 30, 1992, Maddux (0-2) struggled from the start. He managed to work out of a bases-load jam in the top of the first, but the Pirates tagged him for five runs in the second and continued to pound the Cubs' bullpen. "I felt good, I felt relaxed," said Maddux, who insisted he felt no extra pressure about being back with his original team. "I felt relaxed and comfortable on the mound. I just didn't throw the ball where I wanted to." The loss snapped Maddux's 11-game winning streak against Pittsburgh, which outhit Chicago, 17-3, and still stranded 16 runners. "That was big, with it being cold and the wind blowing in, especially getting those runs off a guy like Maddox," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said of the Pirates' uprising in the second. "It gave Kris (Benson) a cushion." The Pirates overcame four errors, including three in the second inning, when the Cubs scored their two runs on second baseman Jose Castillo's throwing error. Despite the shoddy defense, Benson (1-0) allowed only one hit in six innings - an infield single to Sammy Sosa in the first - and earned his first win since May 27, also against the Cubs. He walked four and struck out one. "It wasn't one of my better outings," Benson said. "There were about nine guys I went ball three on, so I guess I was effectively wild." The first overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Pirates, Benson's career has been marked by a series of injuries and he missed the final 2 1/2 months of last season due to shoulder pain. "The guys made it really easy on me by getting so many runs," Benson said. "Even though you could really feel the cold, it turned out to be a great day for the hitters." Jack Wilson, who got seven at-bats, and Raul Mondesi had three hits apiece and Tike Redman and Jason Kendall each drove in three runs for the Pirates. "I'm feeling good at the plate, just putting the barrell on the ball," said Wilson, who has hit safely in all seven games this season. "Moving from the eight to the two-hole, that's what I have to do." The Pirates' big inning in the second was set in motion when Maddux walked Benson to load the bases. "I've never seen him walk a pitcher before and it was a bad day all around for everybody and a good day for them," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. Redman followed with a sacrifice fly, Wilson delivered an RBI single and Kendall made it 4-0 with a two-run single. Kendall later scored on catcher Paul Bako's throwing error.
