Game StoryCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Victories don't get much more complete than the one the Cincinnati Reds posted on Wednesday. Paul Wilson tossed seven scoreless innings and sluggers Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. homered as the Reds posted a 3-1 triumph over Greg Maddux and the Chicago Cubs. Wilson (1-0), who had a rough spring, was dominant from the start, surrendering three singles, a double and a walk. He struck out six and showed no signs of the biceps tendinitis that plagued him the final month of the 2003 season. "It's nice to get the first one out of the way," Wilson said. "I'm always nervous. I felt like I was going 100 miles an hour the first couple of innings." Ryan Wagner worked out of a jam in the eighth by striking out Sammy Sosa. Last season's first-round pick, Wagner retired the first two batters in the eighth before singles by Mark Grudzielanek and Corey Patterson put runners on first and third, with Sosa representing the tying run. "I went to 2-0 on him," Wagner said. "I thought just go after him and throw my best stuff." The rookie fanned Sosa with a slider, down and away. "He (Wagner) has some good stuff," Cincinnati manager Dave Miley added. Danny Graves gave up a two-out homer to Derrek Lee in the ninth but hung on for his first save of the season. Dunn and Griffey were plagued by injuries and inconsistency in 2003 and Griffey sat out the season opener with a strained right calf. But Dunn hit a solo homer in the second and Griffey delivered a two-run blast an inning later. "It felt good to get a chance to go out there," said Griffey, who hit career homer No. 482. "With him (Maddux) you know he's going to be around the plate. You have to make good contact. He struck me out the next at-bat. He's been doing this a long time." Maddux (0-1), returning to Chicago after 10 successful years with the Atlanta Braves, was tagged for three runs and four hits in six innings. He walked two, struck out three and remains 11 wins shy of 300 in his career. Maddux struggled with control early, hitting D'Angelo Jimenez and Griffey in the first inning. It was the first time in his career that he hit two batters in an inning. "I was holding on to my cutter too long," Maddux explained. "I felt good. I wasn't nervous. Mentally, I was where I'd like to be for the next 30 starts." "The guy pitched a four hitter," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said of his starter. "Ordinarily, three runs is not going to be enough to beat us. It wasn't our night." The game marked the first time since June 25 that Cincinnati had Griffey, Dunn and Austin Kearns in the outfield at the same time. "It was nice to see all of them out there," Wilson said. The game was delayed 33 minutes by rain in the fourth inning.
