Game StoryMONTREAL (Ticker) -- After the bullpen blew the game, Greg Maddux could only Cy. Maddux watched a historic win wander away as five Atlanta Braves relievers gave up four runs over the final three innings, allowing the Montreal Expos to rally for a 5-4 victory in 10 innings. Orlando Cabrera's opposite-field double with one out in the bottom of the 10th plated Vladimir Guerrero with the winning run, temporarily denying the Braves their 12th straight postseason berth. Maddux was denied the win in the previous inning, when Montreal rallied for two runs against Will Cunnane and Kent Mercker to tie the game. That cost Maddux his 15th win, which would have marked an unprecedented 16th straight year he had reached that milestone, breaking a tie with the legendary Cy Young. "It's especially tough because he's got maybe one or two more starts," Braves reliever Roberto Hernandez said. "Tonight was typical Maddux. He pitched out of trouble. ... I just hope next outing he'll get it over with." In the 10th, Hernandez (5-3) got Jose Vidro to ground out but walked Guerrero on four pitches before Cabrera hit a liner into the right field corner. "They battled and they came back," Hernandez said. "Of all three pitches that I threw (to Cabrera), that was the worst one and he got a base hit out of it. It wasn't even close to being a strike." "It's not that bad. It happens," Maddux said. "There's 35 (starts) a year. It's part of the game." It was the sixth double of the game for the Expos, who have won 12 of their last 14 home games. The hit made a winner of Rocky Biddle (5-8), who pitched a scoreless 10th. In the eighth, Ray King got two outs before walking Endy Chavez. Jaret Wright hit Vidro with a pitch and gave up an RBI single to Guerrero before Cunnane got Cabrera to fly to right. In the ninth, Ron Calloway led off with a double and Brian Schneider doubled one out later, making it 4-3. Jose Macias had an infield single to put runners at the corners, bringing on Mercker. The lefthander got ahead, 1-2, on Brad Wilkerson before just missing the plate with his next pitch. Wilkerson followed with a sacrifice fly that tied the game. "I felt worse for Merck, to be honest with you," Maddux said. "I thought he came in in a tough situation, first and third, one out, he made a perfect pitch. To do that under pressure is outstanding." "We've just got to find a way to get someone to come in and shut the door," said left fielder Chipper Jones, who drove in three runs. "Say what you want about not getting calls, the bottom line is you can't put yourself in that situation." For six innings, Maddux traded zeros with Tomo Ohka. But in the seventh, Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones connected for back-to-back homers, giving Atlanta the lead. In the bottom half, the Expos halved the deficit as Cabrera singled, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on Todd Zeile's sacrifice fly. "Ten years ago, I might have finished it. Who knows?" said Maddux, who allowed four hits and struck out three without a walk. "Maddux is tough, so you've got to be aggressive on the basepaths and take chances," said Calloway, who had two doubles. "It's hard to string three hits together in an inning to score runs on him." Ohka gave up two runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out four. In the eighth, Luis Ayala surrendered a two-run single to Chipper Jones. "Ohka pitched a fine ballgame. He just didn't get many runs," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "Ayala gave them two big runs, and usually those are the ones that beat you."
