Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- As unkind as the first inning has been to Greg Maddux this season, the Philadelphia Phillies love it just fine. Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell delivered RBI singles in the opening inning and Brett Myers made the early lead stand up with seven solid innings as the Phillies routed the Atlanta Braves, 8-3, and earned a split of the four-game series. Maddux (14-11) was hoping to make history, recording a 15th win for a 16th straight season. But as has been the case nearly the entire season, the veteran righthander had troubles holding the opponent in check early on. In 33 starts this season, Maddux has allowed 109 runs, 34 in the opening inning. He also surrendered three runs in the third and two more in the fourth, putting Atlanta in an early hole it could not dig out of. Maddux allowed seven runs and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings, his second shortest outing of the season. He will have to wait until his next start to break his deadlock with the legendary Cy Young, who also won at least 15 games in 15 straight seasons. "It doesn't matter," Maddux said. "It has nothing to do with pitching, as far as I am concerned. It's not something I worry about. It's not something that I can control. I try to get ready for my next start. I try to go and put myself in a position to have success. That's all. Stuff that goes on besides that, I don't care." "Doggy knows what's at stake," teammate Chipper Jones said. "He needs to pitch well a couple of times. We will score enough runs for him. I would like to have seen him do it at home, in front of the home crowd." Abreu and Marlon Byrd had three hits apiece and Burrell and Chase Utley drove in two runs each for the Phillies, who improved to 33-13 when scoring first. More importantly, Philadelphia inched within one-half game of the idle Florida Marlins for the wild card lead. "If we can get in front early, we have a pretty good record, I think," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "Getting in front of Maddux is big. He's such a good pitcher. Once he gets in a rhythm, forget about it." Myers (14-7) allowed two runs and seven hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four. His only true blemish was a two-run homer he allowed to Matt Franco in the fifth. "After we scored a few runs, I needed to keep pitching my game and not give into the scoreboard," said Myers, who is 9-1 over his last 18 starts. The Braves' magic number for clinching an unprecedented 12th straight division title remained at six. Byrd opened the game by reaching on an infield hit and stealing second. A groundout by Jimmy Rollins moved Byrd to third and Abreu made it 1-0 with a single. Abreu stole second and Jim Thome walked. Maddux appeared to be on the verge of escaping the jam, getting Mike Lieberthal on a popout to center field. But Burrell, who entered the game batting just .209, singled up the middle for a 2-0 lead. "I made some pretty good pitches that they found holes on," Maddux said. "I made some bad pitches and gave up doubles and home runs." "I thought Greg had as good as stuff as he had all season at the start," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "It didn't work out." Maddux is 0-3 with a 9.95 ERA in four starts against the Phillies this season. Atlanta got a one-out double and a two-out triple in the first but failed to score. Cox also was ejected during the frame. Abreu opened the third with a hit and the slow-footed Thome beat out an infield hit. Lieberthal bounced into a double play, but again Burrell came through with a two-out RBI single. Utley followed with his second homer of the season for a 5-0 lead. "It was a fastball," Utley said. "I just tried to put it in play. I got the good part of the bat on it." "That was a big hit," Bowa said. "Utley's going to hit. He's hit everywhere he's played." Singles by Myers - his first career hit - Rollins and Abreu loaded the bases and a groundout by Thome produced a run. Lieberthal's base hit made it 7-0 and ended Maddux's evening. Brian Giles opened the fourth with a double, his second of the game and 47th of the season, which tied a modern team record for the Braves. Tommy Holmes had 47 doubles for the Boston Braves in 1945. Doubles by Utley and Myers in the fifth pushed the lead to 8-0. "I think that was a fluke," Myers said. "I don't think that will ever happen again. That's the fun part."
