Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Chipper Jones had a season-high five RBI and Greg Maddux pitched six effective innings as the Atlanta Braves snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-3 triumph over the Colorado Rockies. Jones drove in five runs for the first time since September 11. He got the Braves going with a two-run double in the first inning. After Rafael Furcal's two-run homer in the second, Jones added an RBI double later in the inning for a 5-0 lead. Jones, who did not play Thursday's series finale at San Francisco due a twisted right knee, capped his big night with a two-run homer in the sixth that opened a 7-3 advantage. The Braves snapped their third three-game losing streak of the season and took out their frustrations after being held to eight runs in three games at San Francisco. "I think you saw some of the frustration come out in the first inning," Jones said. "It's been a tough three days for us. We lost three bad games to lose and this team's not used to doing that. We've got a heck of a lineup to come in here and score some runs and hopefully we can right the ship here in Colorado." The Braves did the most of their damage after right fielder Gary Sheffield was ejected in the first inning by plate umpire Matt Hollowell. "We can maintain productivity throughout our whole lineup," Jones said. "Obviously losing Sheffield in the first some guys have to step up. I was probably in the biggest spot of all because if he (Rockies starter Jason Jennings) gets me out without scoring a run, they set the tone and get momentum." Maddux (12-10) benefited from the 16-hit attack and picked up his 285th career victory. He allowed three runs - two earned and three hits. He struck out four and walked two, throwing 65 of 94 pitches for strikes. Maddux, who has been streaky all season, was coming off back-to-back losses to San Diego and Arizona. But the veteran righthander rebounded and tied Tony Mullane for 25th place on the all-time wins list. "It was big," Maddux said. "We needed it. In San Francisco we played good enough to win at least two of those games, but then again we played bad enough to lose all three. So to get a win tonight kind of gives a little momentum boost." Charles Johnson drove in all three runs for the Rockies, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. He connected for a two-run homer to right-center field in the second and added an RBI groundout in the fourth, pulling the Rockies within 5-3. Atlanta added a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Vinny Castilla and Jones' 22nd homer, a shot to the upper deck in right field. Jennings (10-12) was ripped for eight runs and 12 hits in six innings. He dropped his fourth straight decision and suffered his first home loss since September 19. "They weren't fooled by many pitches," Jennings said. "There's nothing there to find. It's just about using your brain, knowing which hitter you're facing and not trying to get him out the same way every time." After Maddux's night ended, three relievers combined to allow one hit in three scoreless innings. Kevin Grybowski pitched the seventh, Ray King worked around a walk in the eighth and John Smoltz finished up, appearing for just the third time in the last 18 games. Matt Franco's sacrifice fly in the ninth capped the scoring.
