Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After allowing 20 runs in the previous two games, the Arizona Diamondbacks were able to tame the National League's best offensive team behind Curt Schilling. Schilling pitched eight scoreless innings and Alex Cintron belted a solo home run as the Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 blanking of the Braves. With the Braves averaging nearly seven runs per game since the All-Star break, and posting 10 in each of the first two contests of this four-game series, Arizona needed a strong performance from Schilling. The righthander gave them just that, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out 12. "Rod (catcher Rod Barajas) was great. We had a game plan going in and executed it," Schilling said. "I watch a lot of baseball and offensively, I don't know another team that comes close to this team. ... Their offense is phenomenal. Numbers-wise, these guys are doing it all. A lot of it was execution, but a lot of it is mindset." "The way we've been playing and the way we've been swinging the bats all season, it was pretty spectacular," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "You can see by the swings they were getting." It was the 84th career double-digit strikeout game for Schilling (7-6), who retired 13 straight after Marcus Giles' one-out double in the first inning. Schilling, who has 23 strikeouts in his last two starts, moved past Don Drysdale into 25th place on the all-time list with 2,494. "Every time you go up against Greg (Maddux), runs are at a premium," Schilling said. "I don't care what his numbers are, you have to just do everything fundamentally correct. ... I get a rush going up against Greg and teams like this." "He was very tough today," Giles admitted. "He had command of all of his pitches. He was getting it up there at around 93, 95 (miles per hour) and had his off-speed working." Having never faced Maddux before in his career, Cintron posted his third consecutive multi-hit game, including his 10th homer in the seventh to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead. Cintron, who also singled in the fourth, doubled and scored in the ninth. "Greg Maddux pitched a pretty good game," Cintron said. "He left one pitch in the middle and I hit it pretty good. I was looking for it in. I said he was going to come in, and he did. I cheated a little bit." "It was a bad pitch," Maddux said. "He should have hit it out." Maddux (11-10) pitched well, yielding a run and seven hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out five in falling to 1-6 lifetime against Arizona. "You gotta tip your hat to them," Maddux said. "I just got outpitched." Matt Mantei worked out of a jam in the ninth to notch his 18th save. Atlanta's Gary Sheffield stroked a one-out single in the ninth to extend his career-high hitting streak to 21 games. After Cintron gave Arizona the lead by depositing a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall with one out in the seventh, he helped provide some insurance in the ninth. Making his third appearance with the Braves after being re-acquired from Cincinnati on Tuesday, Kent Mercker started the ninth and retired Steve Finley. But Cintron followed with a double and came around to score on Barajas' single to make it 2-0. Mercker, who uncorked a wild pitch before intentionally walking Danny Bautista, escaped without further damage when Bautista was doubled off first base following a flyout by Craig Counsell. Mantei opened the bottom of the inning by striking out Rafael Furcal, but Giles walked on four pitches and Sheffield moved him to third with a single down the right field line. Having not blown a save opportunity since May 27, Mantei fanned Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones to hand the Braves their fourth shutout of the season and first since April 19. "His velocity's back," Brenly said of Mantei. "He's got three pitches and can use them against any hitter. To punch those last two batters out was huge." Arizona nearly snapped the scoreless tie in the fourth. Luis Gonzalez led off the frame with a single and one out later, Finley delivered a base hit. Cintron followed with a single, but center fielder Andruw Jones fielded the ball and fired home to cut down Gonzalez. Maddux induced a groundout by Barajas to end the threat.
