Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres had their way with Greg Maddux. The relievers who followed for the Atlanta Braves did not fare all that well, either. The Padres banged out 13 of their 24 hits off Maddux in a 14-4 victory that handed the Braves their first three-game losing streak since the opening week of the season. Rondell White had four hits and Mark Loretta, Phil Nevin and Gary Bennett each had three for the Padres, who equaled the club mark set April 19, 1982 against San Francisco. Just one of the hits was a homer as Gary Mathews Jr. had a solo blast in the ninth. Maddux (11-9) had won his last five decisions and tossed 11 scoreless innings over his last two starts. But he was tagged for three runs and six hits in the first inning and never recovered. Maddux finished allowing five runs in five innings and came within one hit of the career high he allowed against the Chicago Cubs on May 15, 1999. San Diego led 5-0 after three innings and broke open the game with seven runs in the ninth. Five relievers followed for the Braves, and the roughest outing was endured by Roberto Hernandez, who got just two outs in the ninth inning and was tagged for seven runs and six hits. Just two of the runs were earned. Atlanta leads the National League East Division by a comfortable 12-game margin, but has dropped three straight games for the first time since getting swept by the Montreal Expos in the opening series of the season.
