Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- The combination of Greg Maddux against the punchless Los Angeles Dodgers was a winning one for the Atlanta Braves. Maddux combined with four relievers on a four-hitter as the Braves posted a 2-0 blanking of the Dodgers, who have scored just eight runs in their last eight games. Maddux (10-8) recorded his 283rd career win, tying Jim Kaat for 27th on the all-time list. He yielded just two hits in five innings with two walks and four strikeouts. "Any batter with a bat in their hands is dangerous," said Maddux, who throw 108 pitches. "I don't care what they did yesterday or last week, they still have some pretty good hitters. If you throw it down the midde, even the pitcher can get a hit." John Smoltz tossed a scoreless ninth for his major league-leading 41st save. "You have to win ugly sometimes," Braves left fielder Gary Sheffield said. "We haven't been playing many games, 2-0, 3-0. When you have a game like that, it gives you a playoff feeling." The Dodgers loaded the bases three times but were held to one run or fewer for the 20th time this season and were shut out for the ninth time. "For the last week, we have really struggled offensively," Los Angeles right fielder Shawn Green said. "But we had to face (Curt) Schilling, (Randy) Johnson and Maddux, three future Hall of Famers. That's the way it's going." "We have talent," Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca added. "This is going on too long." The Braves got their runs on Andruw Jones' solo homer in the second inning and Robert Fick's RBI double in the fourth. Hideo Nomo (12-9) took the loss, allowing one run and four hits in two innings. He did not return following an 86-minute rain delay. During the delay, Maddux threw some 40 pitches to live hitters indoors, allowing him to stay in when play resumed. "That's the most pitches Maddux has throw all season," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. "He had 40-some pitches against live hitting (during the delay). For him, he went nine, really." Maddux defeated Los Angeles for the first time since August 12, 2000 but improved to 5-0 lifetime against the Dodgers in Atlanta. Dave Roberts had the only two hits off Maddux, leading off the first and third innings with singles. The Dodgers had a chance to break through against the righthander early, loading the bases in the top of the first, but Adrian Beltre grounded out to end the inning. Ray King worked in and out of a bases-loadedd jam in the sixth, getting Alex Cora to look at a third strike. In the eighth, Roberto Hernandez gave up a double to Green and walked Jeromy Burnitz and Lo Duca to load the bases with one out. Kevin Gryboski replaced Hernandez and fell behind Beltre, 3-1, but got a called strike before inducing Beltre to bounce into an inning-ending double play. "That's my role, to be able to get a double play," Gryboski said. "I made the right pitch in the right situation."
