Game Story

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- An offensive weekend in Montreal may have the Atlanta Braves searching for bullpen help heading into Wednesday's trade deadline. Orlando Cabrera homered and matched a career high with six RBI as the Montreal Expos pounded the Atlanta bullpen in a 13-10 triumph. The Braves bolted to a 4-0 lead and were ahead, 8-4, in the sixth with Greg Maddux on the mound. Maddux allowed a two-run homer to Ron Calloway in the bottom of the inning and Ray King (3-1) took over to start the seventh. King did not retire any of the three batters he faced and fellow relievers Kevin Gryboski and Roberto Hernandez also were ineffective. Gryboski allowed a run while retiring just one batter and Hernandez was tagged for three runs and four hits in 1 1/3 innings. The Braves scored 33 runs in the series but lost two of the three games. Atlanta has compiled the best record in baseball behind their potent offense and solid starting pitching, but the bullpen - other than All-Star closer John Smoltz - has been erratic at best. With the team seemingly headed for another postseason berth, Atlanta general manager John Schuerholz may look to make a move for a veteran reliever before Wednesday's non-waiver trade deadline. "We played poorly today, that sums it up," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "We have got a great ballclub, we are hitting it, catching it, and we can pitch it too. We just didn't pitch well this series." Maddux, who was denied his 10th win of the season, defended his bullpen. "There are not going to be many times when the offense puts up eight or 10 runs and you lose," Maddux said. The Braves' Marcus Giles tied a major league record with four doubles. He became the 20th player to accomplish the feat and first since Houston's Jeff Bagwell on June 14, 1996. "(The loss) takes all the shine off of it unfortunately," Giles said. "But that is the way it goes, it is just part of the game." Montreal starter Tomo Ohka was tagged for eight runs and 14 hits in five innings. Julio Manon (1-2) followed with two scoreless frames and notched his first career victory. Rocky Biddle worked a perfect ninth for his 25th save. "We didn't give up and that's what is important," Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "We got a lot of clutch hits today and Cabrera had a tremendous day. Everybody chipped in today." "The bullpen did the job today, they were great," Cabrera said. "I don't think people realize how much depth we have down there." The Braves seized a 4-0 lead in the first as Ohka committed a two-run throwing error and Robert Fick hit the first of his two, two-run homers. Endy Chavez opened the bottom of the first inning with his fifth home run but back-to-back doubles by Rafael Furcal and Giles in the second extended Atlanta's advantage to 5-1. Chavez had an RBI single and Cabrera a two-run base hit as Montreal closed within 5-4. Again the Braves responded, scoring twice in the fourth on a two-run double by Gary Sheffield. Giles' RBI double in the fifth - his fourth two-base hit in as many at-bats - pushed the Atlanta advantage to 8-4. The last player to double in each of his first four at-bats was the Chicago Cubs' Billy Williams on June 9, 1969. Calloway's homer off Maddux in the bottom of the sixth halved the Expos' deficit and Montreal torched the Atlanta bullpen in the seventh. King took over and walked Jose Macias before surrendering back-to-back singles to pinch hitter Henry Mateo and Chavez. After Chavez's base hit got the Expos within a run, Gryboski came on and Jamey Carroll got down a bunt. Cabrera followed with a two-run single that gave Montreal a 9-8 lead. Jung Bong came on and got the only batter he faced before Hernandez replaced the rookie and surrendered a two-run shot to Wil Cordero. Fick's second two-run homer of the game got Atlanta within 11-10 in the eighth, but Hernandez continued to struggle - allowing a two-run homer to Cabrera in the bottom of the inning. "It was a great comeback, we actually hit Maddux pretty good," said.
